The Groove November 2010

November 1, 2010 By Scrapbook MAX

Baby Blue by Rachel

In the Groove

This month, our theme is “Those Beautiful Blues”. Who says that the blues have to be sad? Not the fab scrappers in our community! We know you’ll enjoy and get inspired by the gorgeous blue-toned layouts featured this month – from deep, inky indigos to powder blues, you’re sure to fall in love with blue all over again!

We’ve also got a fun feature story about two Scrapbook MAX! -ers meeting in person, and of course the ever-popular monthly freebie challenge hosted this month by Katie Castillo (with a 10% coupon to use in the store!). Read all the details below.

Happy Scrapping!

Babies in Blues

We love the different moods created by different shades of blue. The deep blue has an intensity that draws you in, while the pale blue suggests dreamland. Well done, ladies!

Purple’s Like Blue, Too!

We love the purpley blue magic in this layout. So soothing and elegant! The border made of greenery really makes everything “pop”!

Thanks You Breast Cancer Challenge Participant!

Last month, we held a one-week challenge to raise money in support of breast cancer research. Participants were asked to donate whatever they could to help this great cause…and your generosity was absolutely amazing!

Over the course of that one week, you helped us raise over $1500!! We are thrilled with the results and couldn’t have done it without your generosity. A HUGE  thanks to all who participated.

WAY TO GO!!

Scrapbook MAX! Special: Scrapbook MAX! Friends Get Together In Person!

…and it almost didn’t happen, as you’ll discover by reading the journal text in this great layout (click on the layout to enlarge it)! Read how dedicated Scrapbook MAX!-ers Michelle and Maureen decided to meet when they realized they’d be in the same location. They enjoyed putting real faces to names, and we just loved to hear about it. Scrapbooking really does bring people together!

The Groove Monthly Freebie Challenge

Applelicious Kit by Katie Castillo

 The Freebie:

Each month, a designer offers a great freebie mini-kit and issues a challenge based on that kit. All you need to do is download the freebie, create a layout that steps up to the challenge, upload it to the Groove challenge and post a link to your layout in a reply to the challenge thread!

This month, Scrapbook MAX! kit designer Katie Castillo has shared a lovely 5 x 7 page based on her Applelicious line of designs (see sample images).

The Challenge:

Make 3 layouts with Katie’s freebie page. For the first page, pop in the perfect photos, but don’t change anything else (you can add journaling if you wish). For the second page, using the same photos, rearrange the embellishments and other elements to layout the page in a different way. For your third page, choose new photos, and alter the colors of the page (you can rearrange the items on this one or leave Katie’s layout intact).

Find the challenge thread here!

Two more fabulous blue-toned layouts to cap off this special colour-themed issue of  The Groove. Sassy’s takes inspiration from the soothing waves, and makes us feel like dangling our toes in the water. Melissa  was inspired by the blue eyes of the star of her layout, using gorgeous moody shades.

The Groove March 2009

A lovely friendship layout by Winnie49

 In The Groove

From the beloved book “Anne of Green Gables”, we learn the delicious phrase “Kindred Spirits”. What is a kindred spirit? A friend, certainly, but more than that. It’s a bond, an understanding, a sense of “I’ve always known you!” between two people that has always been there, somehow, even before they had ever met!

This month in The Groove, we feature layouts that pay tribute to special friendships. And from the looks of the photos in these layouts and the love with which they were made, surely these are all “Kindred Spirit” layouts!

Get inspired to scrap a layout for your kindred spirit. Wouldn’t this make a wonderful gift to send as a surprise email, or to print out and frame?

Below, you’ll also find a Scrapper Profile, and a freebie and challenge from Scrapbook MAX! Booster Pack Store designer Crystal Longbrake. This challenge has an extra twist, so be sure to be sure to get the details!

My Family, My Friends

Friends are a blessing in life. So it’s a double blessing when members of our own family are also our dear friends! We love how these two layouts celebrate the joy of friendship and family. Scrappyfrog’s “Cousins” layout captures a magical day together. Tackettup’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” layout is full of joy, silliness, and laughter – just what a great family friendship should be brimming with!

Through Thick and Thin

These layouts are the perfect “bookends” for the things we experience together as friends. The first layout, by LindaPete, recalls a shared moment of sophistication, elegance, and celebration, all in gorgeous pastel tones. The second layout by Wickel, paints in vibrant blues and  breathless words, the adventure, abandon and spirit that also comes with friendship. Through thick and thin, friends are with us always!

Crystal Longbrake

Meet Crystal Longbrake, a.k.a. DigiScrapalicious, a friendly forum member, and Scrapbook MAX! Booster Pack Store designer. Get to know more about Crystal below, and check out some of her favorite layouts!

Q-  Tell us one thing about yourself that others are often surprised to learn.
Hmm…my life is an open book, I’m not mysterious and am pretty open and approachable so I don’t think there’s much that would surprise anyone…does that mean I’m boring? hehehe

Q- What made you interested in digital scrapbooking?
I was pregnant with my second child and I realized I still didn’t have my first child’s baby book done (he was seven at the time). I knew I needed to find a quicker more economical way to do it since the traditional way wasn’t cutting it.

Q- Where do you get your layout ideas?
I digiscrap like I paperscrapped. I love the traditional layouts where the pictures are the main focus.

Q- What’s your favorite color (in general)? How about to scrap with?
My favorite color is brown. It’s become a joke with my friends, every time I buy something in a different color, they’re all like “what it didn’t come in brown?”. I scrap with the colors from my pictures, I like the scraps to compliment the event I’m trying to document.

Q- Tell us about your favorite feature of Scrapbook MAX!.
My favorite feature has got to be the movies. I love to share my layouts with others using this.

Editors’ Tip: To publish your scrapbook as a movie, in Scrapbook MAX!, go to File> Publish To> Movie

Q- What tip would you share with a newbie to Scrapbook MAX!?
If you see a template you like but want to use different papers or colors that’s ok. Open the template and switch out each embellishment and paper scrap to your liking. It’s an easy way to do a quick layout.

Q- What’s the subject of the kit that you are working on right now?
It’s called “No Sleep for Braden” and it’s a boy’s pajama kit. It all started with my son playing “No Sleep Til Brooklyn” on Guitar Hero during a sleepover and kind of spiraled from there.

Q- How would you describe your scrapbooking style?
My scrapbooking style is simple clean and neat. I like my pages to tell a story and I try to include some journaling.

Q- Who do you admire most? Why?I admire my Mom the most. She’s a trooper and one of the strongest women I know.

Here are some of Crystal’s favorite layouts!

Friends For Life!

Not only are the layouts themselves absolutely gorgeous, but just look at the smiles on these ladies’ faces – sheer joy of being together! Pickngrin’s fresh, whimsical elements are the perfect backdrop for the photos of these lovely friends. And scrappyaggie48’s neutral-toned, elegant design sets off the sparkling grins worn by these two beautiful ladies.

Carena-A Visiting Friend Layout

A beautiful layout featuring two Scrapbook MAX! community members (Evee and Carena) who met in person. We love how Scrapbook MAX! has been a part of people coming together!

 – layout by Carena

In The Groove

Do you remember your very first friend? I made my first school friend on the very first day of school. We came to class with the same lunchbox, and of course at lunch time, each took the wrong one to our desks. Soon after we had figured out what had happened, we were sitting together sharing cookies and deciding what to play at recess. The friendship lasted throughout our school days, as we grew from shy little girls with the wrong lunch boxes, to young women sharing our hopes and dreams.

In this issue of The Groove, we’re celebrating friendships by featuring layouts that pay tribute to friends. Some are full of fun, some full of grace. Some full of style, some full of humour – just like our friends! We’re especially excited to bring to you the special story of OnieRN and MaggieMae, two Scrapbook MAX!-ers who, in traveling the country, decided to meet in person. Below, they tell us all about it!

Also below, find an amazing freebie and fun challenge by Donna Thomas. Have fun, reflect on friendships, and get into The Groove!

– Karin, co-editor of The Groove

Personal Challenge: Take a look at the layouts below for inspiration. Then,  make and share a friendship layout of a friend who’s on your mind! Remember, Scrapbook MAX! makes it easy to share – you can print, email, burn to a CD, and more.

Celebrate the lighter side of friendship!

scrappyaggie48-Fun With Friends Layout

 – layout by scrappyaggie48

makeyesup-My Best Friend Layout

 – layout by makeyesup

Our friends have seen us through it all – including the times when we let loose!

We love the free-spirited photo and sassy elements chosen by scrappyaggie48 in her fun friend layout. Woo-hoo!

We can also relate to the perfect, light-hearted caption chosen by makeyesup. Thank goodness we trust our friends – the stories they could tell…

Bright Idea: Show a friend how much you care by making them a fun layout with a favorite picture, cute embellishments, and a witty caption. Then email your page to them directly from Scrapbook MAX! by choosing File > Email. It’s sure to brighten their day!

 Friends Throughout The Years

fourfoxes-A Day Spent With Friends Layout

– layout by fourfoxes

 sacannon-Friends Through The Years Layout

– layout by sacannon

Photos of friends are dear to our hearts. Even more so when you do something special with them, like making a layout to commemorate a moment or a special time together.

You can either choose the photos you’ve just snapped, like fourfoxes has done in her lovely friendship layout. Don’t you just love the close-up photo contrasting with the photo of the girls walking off together in the distance? Lovely!

Or, choose photos that you’ve had for a while. You can scan your cherished photographs, and use them in Scrapbook MAX! to preserve them for many more years to come! We love sacannon’s knack for using black and white photos with vintage-themed elements. Classy, sentimental, and special!

Bright Idea: Why not make a small album showcasing a friendship “through the years”? Create a series of layouts at a small size, such as 4 x 6 (Choose Page> Settings> Size to alter the size pf pages in Scrapbook MAX!). Begin with a layout featuring photos from the earliest stages of your friendship until the present. Then, print out two copies by choosing File > Print in Scrapbook MAX!, and insert in two 4 x 6 photo albums –  a great gift for yourself and a friend, and perfect for toting in a purse!

 Rhapsody in Blue

Marion-Friends Across The Generations Layout

– layout by Marion

pkdoll-Friends Layout

– layout by pkdoll

These two blue-toned layouts certainly caught our eye! The first by Marion shows how this traditional “boy color” does justice to a father/son layout. What a great mix of denim blue with leathery brown tones!

The second layout by pkdoll shows us, on the other hand, that blue isn’t for “boys only”. The muted blue shades are soft soothing, and match the philosophical tone of Aristotle’s quote: “What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies”

An amazing description that captures the feeling we have about our most amazing friendships!

Bright Idea: Does your friend have a birthday coming up? Why not make a personalized birthday card using a photo of the two of you to celebrate? Print it out or email it to say “Happy Birthday!”. Your layout can also be the birthday gift itself! Print (File > Print) at a size for which it is easy to find a great frame, such as 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 (Choose Page> Settings> Size to alter the size pf pages in Scrapbook MAX!). Insert into a special frame, and voila!

Scrapbook MAX! Friends Meet in Person!

MaggieMae-Meeting Onie LayoutOnieRN-OnieRN and MaggieMae Meet in Person Layout

Layouts by MaggieMae and OnieRN commemorating their meeting in person.

Read on to hear more about how these two lovely ladies who met online in the Scrapbook MAX! online community met in person, and put “real faces” to “cyber screen names”!

OnieRN and MaggieMae are familiar names in the Scrapbook MAX! forums, sharing layouts, digital scrapbooking advice, and friendship with others. When the two realized that they would be in the same city, they decided to meet in person. The story of their meeting follows below. We’re delighted how Scrapbook MAX! has played a role in bringing people together!

How did you get involved in the Scrapbook MAX! Online Community?

OnieRN: I was googling for digital scrapbooking tips, after purchasing another program at an Electronics Store. I was having a hard time with the other program, when Scrapbook MAX! showed up in the google. I downloaded the trial version and was hooked within a couple days. It was so easy to use!

MaggieMae: I got involved in the scrapbooking community here shortly after I found the program in May 2006. It was my first forum and first digital scrapbooking (experience). It’s been such a great learning experience!

How did you two decide to meet?

OnieRN: I was driving through Tucson, Arizona to visit my parents in Mesa, AZ. I contacted Julie (MaggieMae) and to see if she wanted to meet, as I drove through town. The timing was perfect, as my parents were in Tuscon at the time, doing some mission work. The two of us had been communicating for nearly a year, when we arranged to meet. Julie and her husband had 2 homes and spent the winter in Tuscon, so it was perfect timing.

When and where did you meet?

MaggieMae: We met at an I-Hop right off I-10 because it was easy to find! We had lunch and talked about just about everything. My DH Ron was there and Onie’s son Josh was there, too.

What sort of things did you chat about? Anything particularly funny or surprising that you would like to share?

OnieRN: We were only together for a few hours, but we chatted about everything from our kids to our grandkids. We also talked about some of the other (Scrapbook MAX!) members and how wonderful it would be to meet them too. Julie’s husband is the picture taker, so Ron was snapping pictures.

MaggieMae: Onie and I talked a lot about digital scrapbooking and computers – I think we bored Ron and Josh! LOL We also talked about how much all of us know about one another through our scrapbooking.

What was the best part of meeting your fellow Scrapbook MAX!-er?

OnieRN: It was wonderful to have a real face and voice behind the screen name (MaggieMae). I realized that we had so much in common and we had a lot of laughter between us. The reality that there is a real person on the other end is the best!

MaggieMae:The best part was actually seeing that we were real – not just cyber people!! It was so much fun to see each other in person and recognize each other from pictures and realize that we knew each other so well!

What else would you like to share with us about your meeting?

OnieRN: I believe that Julie and I were the first to meet of the group. Everyone knew we were meeting and they were as excited for us as we were. Our meeting involved the two of us, Julie’s husband Ron, My son Josh and my parents. We talked and talked and talked! The nice waitress kept coming by and refilling our glasses for several hours.

MaggieMae: There really wasn’t a best part about the meeting – we enjoyed it from start to finish.

Do you still keep in touch?

OnieRN: We do stay in touch, and soon we will be living closer. I am hoping that we will be able to have many more opportunities to see each other.

MaggieMae: …soon we will be practically neighbors when Onie moves to Phoenix!

What is your favorite part about the Scrapbook MAX! community?

OnieRN: The closeness of the group. I have found this group of individuals to be loving and caring. We all support one another in good times and in bad times. We’ve had marriages, deaths, babies born, and sicknesses in our group. We started a buddy system, where we have exchanged personal contact information with a group of individuals. The system was started so that we could stay in touch, in the event someone “disappears” (from the forums). I have had many friends in my life time but I have never experienced anything like the love we all share with each other. We are a big family! Closer than most real families.

Our group is now talking about arranging a large meeting in the next year or so. We want to get as many of us together as possible. So, with any luck, we will be putting a cruise together.

MaggieMae: My favorite part about the SBM! community is the genuine friendship, warmth and caring we have for one another. We share our lives through our scrapbooking and in the forum.

Thanks OnieRN and MaggieMae for sharing your awesome story and lovely layouts!

Has anyone else out there met a fellow “Scrapbook MAX!-er”? We’d love to hear your story! Email us at [email protected] if you would like to participate in an interview. We may feature it in an upcoming issue of The Groove!

The Groove

Digital Scrapbooking Inspiration – August 2007

In the Groove

“Friends Forever” is this month’s “Groove-y” theme. To celebrate, you’ll notice that we’re featuring more work than ever by our dear friends from the online Scrapbook MAX! Community – that’s you, folks! This, we promise, is just the beginning of a new trend – look for more and more layouts by our very own Community members in future issues of The Groove…maybe even YOU!

As usual, we’ve got a tantalizing freebie for you to check out…this one’s by Scrapbook MAX! Booster Pack Store designer Esther Barry (a.ka. the incomparable “Granny” – read below for details)! We’ve also got another exciting layout contest, with a challenging design twist (see below). And of course, happy scrappin’, friends!

Friends Forever – Through Thick and Thin

There’s almost nothing more precious in the world than a friend. Through thick and thin, laughter and tears, togetherness and distance, friends make us laugh, keep us strong, and believe in us even when we can’t seem to believe in ourselves. The following layouts beautifully capture the essence of friendship – when faced with the passage of time, or separation by great distances, true friendship endures the challenge.

Meet Michelle McCoy (a.k.a. wolvsie35), a friendly, helpful, and talented voice in the Scrapbook MAX! online community, as well as a designer for the Scrapbook MAX! Booster Pack Store. Get to know Michelle a little better by reading her interview below, and check out some of her favorite layouts!

Q- If we asked your friends to describe you, what would they say?
A- I’m caring, creative, always wanting to please others.

Q- How did you get involved with digital scrapbooking?
A- I love to take photos and be creative with them.

Q- Besides scrapbooking, what do you do for fun?
A- Design needlepoint patterns, draw, write poetry, bowling, listen to music, spend time with my family and my dog Boo Bear (newfoundland/chow mix).

Q- Who are the most special people in your life. Why?
A- First off, my mom. She has been there for me through everything and is always supportive, no matter what or how crazy my idea may be. Second, would be my two boys. They are always interested in my new creations and willing to help me in any way. Thirdly, my fiancé – he has become my inspiration by giving me the support I need and never complains when I become too busy with designing.

Q- Where do you find inspiration for your layouts?
A- I find my needlepoint designs to be my main inspiration. They come from my drawings, then I make a cross stitch design for them and sew them. The more things I can make with my designs, the more content I am. My family and friends through Scrapbook MAX! also bring light to everything I make.

Q- What’s your next scrapbook project?
A- Ideas are flowing non-stop now that I’m a designer for MAX!…My next focus will be making templates from my kits.

Q- If you could be a celebrity for one day, who would you be and why?
A- I wouldn’t want to be a celebrity but I think if I could be an angel for a day, I would help people realize that life is too short to take it for granted.

Creative Genius

Here’s a chance to wear your favorite layouts on your “sleeve” – or on your chest, your tote bag, your pillowcase, or any other place you dream up! That’s right – we’re talking T-Shirt transfers! Create a great “transferable” layout, then check out your local office supply store for the special transfer paper required. Follow the printing instructions, choose the item that you want to transfer your masterpiece to, and then get out the ol’ iron! And, since we’re celebrating friends this month, why not take up this creative genius challenge and make a t-shirt for a friend, featuring your “friend”-liest layout, of course!

Contest: “Friends Are Like Rainbows…”

This month we’re looking for friend-themed layouts…but there’s an added challenge! In your design, you must either incorporate the 7 colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet), OR creatively complete the phrase “Friends Are Like Rainbows…” in journal text or in a caption (e.g., “Friends Are Like Rainbows, Follow Them And You’ll Find Gold”). Hey, maybe you can even do both…Get creative!!

Three winning layouts will be published in the next issue of The Groove: 1st prize is a $20 gift certificate to the Scrapbook MAX! Booster Pack Store! 2 runners up will each receive an official Scrapbook MAX! mousepad.

To enter, publish your layout as a JPEG image using the ‘High Quality’ and ‘Web/Email’ options, and upload it to the contest page in the Scrapbook MAX! gallery. All entries will be available for viewing. Contest closes Monday, August 27, 2007, Midnight (CST). ** Note: You must be a registered member of the Scrapbook MAX! forums to enter this contest.
