A Neuk or Nook is a corner or a small corner part of something, in this case the east corner of Fife. This is one of the typical east coast fishing villages with the houses clustered around the harbour. The fisherfolk lived in the upper part with their outside stone stairs, while down below, ropes, nets, creels, and all the stuff they needed for work, would be stored.
This is the picturesque village of Crail, now mostly given over to holiday cottages, though there are still lobster fishermen working out of the harbour.
