Journaling reads:
If you’ve been up a two-track lane where trees, a slight rise and a curve curtain your view, inspiring you to move forward to see what’s around the bend—and its deep enough into the country where you get nothing on your car radio—you might have been on Trail A.
Trail A was part of the club that provided the site for my grandfather's cabin. It was one lane, two ruts with sand or grass between. In the logging days, it had been a hastily-set railroad.
Enough traffic passed over it to keep the sand ruts compact. But if you moved but eight inches to either side, if you didn't have four-wheel-drive, you'd slough and sink as surely as if you had skated off a winter road into 12 inches of powder snow.
The Club has many trails, but Trail A was the one for us. It might have been our choice because Pullup Lake was at the end, half a mile long, a few hundred yards wide, and barely 12 feet deep at the deepest. Lakes make excellent punctuation to cap an evening’s ride: the sun setting, the lake surface ringed with jumping fish, swirling birds making forays from the forest edge, curling over the water for insects.
We would go an hour or so before dusk. It would already be darkish in the woods at the trailhead, tree canopies closing in overhead, nothing but thickets of tree trunks on either side of the trail.
In this tunnel-like entry, roots twisted into the ruts, shiny from the polish of tires crossing them, and the car would bounce and slide long them. In the deepest part of the woods, the sand in the ruts would shade into brown, then black and you could see standing water on either side of the road.
“They’re watching us,” my mother would say, “the deer are back there watching us.” The rest of the traverse would be unfathomably quiet as all but the driver tried to see deer in the woods.

Eye - I write various things, but no books yet.
The cabin's loss was hard for the family. Shortly after my grandfather died in 1959, my grandmother offered it to each of her five children in turn. At about double market value, plus annual club dues (the latter, truth to tell, were not bad).
Each had to turn the offer down, and it went to an owner outside the family (at double market price, of course). Some time in the 1970s it burned. Haven't been back up there, but I'm betting it's been replaced with a mini-mansion.
