Poor Granny... you lead a deprived life. You never had to watch your husband agonize over the best graphite to use to make his son's pinewood derby the winning car. My sons are in their 40's now and their cars are still stored in the attic.

Hope these will help you, Lsignal.

Smile What is the PineWood Derby

Grannywin: Thanks, so much for that block of wood. I took varies pictures of stages of construction, but I didn't take a picture of the block of wood. That scout is great, too. That is what the kids actually do.

As for what the Pinewood Derby is...It is a car race for boys in which the kids, that is the Dads, have to widdle, carve, sand etc., a car out of a small block of wood. It originated with the Boy Scouts but Awanas, as well as the YMCA, have big Pinewood Derbys. I guess it must be pretty much an American thing, but Awanas organization is all over the world.

Some parents are probably purist and make the kids make the car themselves, but they are few and far between. For the most part, the Dads make the cars and the kids have a big racing competition. The Pinewood Derby is, basically, a racing competition of small, handmade cars, a bit bigger than the size of a matchbox car. The cars don't have motors but they can and do have just about everything else.

My description is lacking, because it doesn't capture the joy and gusto that all the participants bring to the competition. Everyone is really happy. The boys jump around and cheer, The men are proud a little serious about their own car but still smiling, and the women are happy watching our kids and husbands be so happy.

Really, any race car embellishment would probably be perfect.

Here of a snapshot of my sons (of yeah..my husband's ) car.

    Default Race

I thought you were talking about the "Soap Box Derby" My father and my brothers all raced in that. They are real racers that go down a hill with the driver. They have them all over the country. The Final winners are all sent to Canton Ohio for the Main Event!. It's really cool. I remember being at the race in Irvin California, when my brothers raced. On that day, they annouced over the loud speakers that man had just walked on the moon. The crowd was cheering!

Yeap!! Never had kids, so I had never heard of this.

LSignal....I put a little something together for you. Wanted to give it a sense of speed and motion. Hope none of you are scared of snakes, but then, you picked the name, right?

Click to view, then right click to save. If it's not really clear, please let me know and I can e-mail it to you.

    Hope you like it!

I didn't have kids either, so I didn't know what it was. (Don't feel bad Granny!). I figured it might be either cars or horses, but what a great hobby for kids.....er... husbands! hehe
