Newbie needs your help

Hello everyone, I am new to this digital stuff and i love working with it, but i do have a few ? I use photoshop and photoshop elements, how in the heck do I make my own shapes and masks, and what is the difference between the two.

masks tend to be black on white and shapes are white on black....so really no different at all

to make a shape or mask you need to make a black and white jpeg image - use it as you would a shape in smb ...the white areas are the areas that will show up and the black areas are the areas that will be cut away
