Formatting journal text

How do I bold or intalicize one or two words within a body of journal text? When I push the format button, all the text changes. When I highlight the word or words I wish to format, the whole body of text still changes.

When I want a word Bolded or Underlined I space where that word will be (meaning hit space bar for each letter) Then I use another text box, type the word I want, bold it or underline it and set it in the place where spaces are.

Someone else might know a different way, but this is my way
