Question about grunge splotches

Well, that is what I call them anyway.

I am a bit unsure how to use them, is it just like I have pictured here? Or is there a way to use them properly.

Not sure... You mean what I call photo mask? If yes use it as you use a shape.

You can also use it as an embellishment/element. I have done A quick example to show you what I mean. I hope this helps.

I DO find this program easy to use, but sometimes it pays to ask questions to make life a little easier :-)

You used it "properly" and it can be used many ways... you can re-size it and change the shades and transparency and layer it , turning each layer on maybe a slightly differnt angle .. to create a another effect..
you can use it to make backgrounds grungy looking ( like a stain)
Or fill the shape with a texture/pattern
