my first computer was commodore vic20, then we splashed out and bought a commodore 64 (complete with dotmatrix printer) I thought I was in heaven......then my hubby came home one day with a PC10 which had 20meg hard drive (wow huge so I thought), 128mb ram (it was really zinging) and two 5 1/4 floppies.....It was truly state of the art LOL.....We certainly have come a long way

We also used to have Atari with a skin keyboard; upgraded to one with regular keyboard. And then there was the time I had to stay up all night entering contestants for a national swim meet because the Trash-80 kept eating the swimmers! (TRS-80 was a klunky unit from Radio shack featuring green LCD monitor! We have come a long way and the prices have dropped. That just means they were way overpriced before. Besides the aforementioned, I have had a few no-names (put togethers), a few Gateways including the big monster Dimension which could only go to a resolution of 800 x 600 or 640 x 480 with a monster monitor. Also several Dell's and a couple Sony's. Hey I sound like I'm doing the Bubba Gump Shrimp thing -- that's about it!

ROFLMAO!!! Reading through all the posts from you ladies makes me feel a lot less old (in computer years)...my first experience was in 1983 with a military grade "state of the art" IBM mainframe (only took 10 feet of wall space) with a 9 inch "green screen" that was programmed with punch cards...
Then I got "spoiled" with an Apple 2 GS with dual 5 1/4 inch drives and 64k RAM...
I can still hear my C.O. yelling for the daily reports I was supposed to have ready by 0700...<shivers>

HP-UX is a lot like stepping back into the stone ages in some ways...but it sure is reliable...and I can't wait until Linux is more heavily developed for by commercial software companies...

Anyone who wants to go with Windows Vista on a computer...give it another 6 months and go with the premium or business edition...and make sure the hardware you get is capable of running the 64 bit version in 2 years...just my 2 cents...

Default My Computer, Then & Now

Mommabird, you can still get XP computers from Dell for a short while longer. Yes, the support for XP will be going away, but if you take care of it and maintain it, keeping ugly programs out and such, you can look forward to another 4 years of use out of it, even without the support. By then, Vista will be the program of choice for Microsoft users, and the next version to come along will be anticipated with dread.

This whole discussion brought to mind the first computer my family ever had. It was an Adam - advertised as "the complete computer in a box!". It had no hard drive, and used special cassette tapes to store information on. It came with a daisy wheel printer that was the noisiest thing I'd ever heard. But, we were the first family on the block to have a computer, and we thought it was just something really special. It cruised along with a blazingly fast proccessor speed of 3.58 MHz...

I was so amused by what was top of the line then and average now that I had to put together a little layout for it all...

And yes, my current computer really is flamingo pink, much to my teenage son's dismay.

These posts are appreciated; I am going to hold out as long as my computer does. Cool layout; us oldtimers can really appreciate that!

And I can relate to the old punch card. When I was in college, the work study kids would make so many mistakes on the punch cards, we got some perforated punch cards and used paper clips to punch them out. Talk about going blind and slow!!! Whew!

Sounds like we have a lot of "Oldies, But Goodies" in here!

Thanks again for all your responses. Eye noticed you did not care to elaborate, guess you didn't want to raise your blood pressure, huh?

Just putting in my 2 cents... I got a new computer with Vista and I have to honestly say I love it... I too thought it was gonna be a nightmare, but thank goodness it wasnt...anything I have run into was easily fixable. Now I am not sure if it would be different with a laptop... I havent got my hands on one of those babies...YET
