Yes I agree it is a bit of a dinosaur now. If you run a search, (might be of some help to you) I think it might have been in this forum, there was a discussion on Vista about a month ago, that had quite a few people share their views on Vista.

Whatever you do, don't ask Eye if she likes Vista, Eye hates Vista with a definite passion

Personally, I will not touch Vista until they have fully tested and developed the programme to a point where it is stable, and not just another gimmicky programme put out before it is ready, for us guinea pigs to struggle with. If I was you, I would put some feelers out with Dell and see if they can supply the same spec as the HP with XP for anywhere close to the same price or lower. You never know, competition is rife in today's market and they may be compliant. Besides they are a good company to deal with, service department is good too.

OTIE!! So good to see you in here giving some of your wise techie advice on computers. Have heard so many good things about Vista with just as many bad things. Too new to make any real judgements.

I have been told to stay away from Vista basic. Most now come with Home Premium and will upgrade for about $69 to the top level. I remember when Windows was just Windows. Heck, I remember when there were no Windows! Only DOS, then Windows was a program you ran under DOS, not it's own operating system. There are some features I would like to have in Vista, like handwriting recog built in (I use a Wacom pad and they recommend it strongly) Anyway, still using the sick puppy and it seems to be doing a little better, maybe it knows I am looking for a replacement! Anyway, thanks for input. By the way, it now come with Service Pack 1 installed.
    Please keep giving your opinions!

I think with Vista Mommabird that it is just another one of Microsoft's programmes that will always be very buggy until at least Service pack 2 comes out. That has been the way that all the other versions have worked - diabolical until service pack 2 and then whoops, Microsoft pulls support and brings out another bug ridden programme.

Like you, I could be classed as very old by today's youth. I too remember the beloved Dos based programmes and servers that required a whole room (air con and dust proofed) just to run about 5-6 computers. The massive big tape discs about 30cm across,
5+1/4 inch floppys. Programming macros in perl and basic. I think I will quit while I am showing my age.

Well, I'd say you remember 8 inch floppies and tape backups as well! Guess we have been doing this too long. I even had a computer with NO HARDDRIVE, only 2 floppies! But it could run Lotus and WP (both DOS versions!)

And do you remember when having a 16MG hard drive was a hell of a lot of memory?? If I had that amount now I'd be stuck.

And whenever you got a new computer, it was $5,000 (US Dollars). The next time, it would be more computer, but it would be right around 5 Grand! And remember when Billy Boy Gates said no one would ever need more the 64 mB RAM!!!

My hubbie can't figure out why he can still use the same band saw forever, but computers change so fast! He brings that one up everytime I need a new computer.

And I bet he is chirping away about exactly that right now!!

And as for dear Bill Gates, I wonder how he would like his 64Mb Ram served up, with lettuce, mayo, steak sauce? I currently have 2Gb ram in dual slots and I still find my system to be too slow. My husband can't believe the prices of computers either. My first computer was top spec, state of the art, when I bought it back in 1987 and it cost £1500 back then. The poor thing was truly out of date and exhausted 5 years later and a new one cost me about £900 with twice as much Ram, triple the HD, plus an A3 printer thrown in. Just bought another one 6 months ago and again top spec, but only £380. About the only type of computer that hasn't really come down in price is the laptop.
