took me a while to figure out what needed to be fixed in Julie's posting. I see now. The title line...: In todays world you are allowed to make up your own words so just give us a description to go with the word. Looks like a reasonable word to me.

Looking forward to this challenge. I have purchased a lot of AutisticWonder add ons already. Love all the frilly frames and the manly frames. ;)

Please download the freebie #1 from kjoistudio..and here's the link.. PLACE it in an EMBELLISHMENT folder in SBM..more on that later!! Today..get comfy with the tutorials...and play!!

http://kjoistudios.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=7&products_id=680

You will need this to learn about converting freebie templates outside of max and bringing them in..using GREYSCALE to make it negotiable!!

Also, for those that have NO CLUE about SHAPES in SBM..please download the old tutorials I made on the subject. They are here for you to load in pdf format..You can view this from your max program or Adobe reader, etc. Put in a Published folder for easy access..or create the published folder in your SBM Published Folder section that I have under My Documents..That is NOT the Gallery containing SBM folder section..It's the other!! Name it the CHALLENGE or something and access from SBM New ALBUM.

THE CHALLENGE this month is to CREATE TEMPLATES that relie on a ONE STEP process..Here's the idea...

http://www.scrapbookmax.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9296

ALSO included is an OPTIONAL Solid COLOR pack for you to use to create your WONDERS!! It has 6 different colors of GREEN and 6 different levels of white to black grays I use to create Masked templates..

Basically, you are doing a MASKED template and FLATTENING the image into ONE workable SHAPE for a QUICK page..You can embellish anyway you like!!

Please make your ONE step Masks and share them with us in SHAPE form as well as linking or putting them in .smt format of your decorated version. For those that manage to submit 10 template SHAPES, you will get ANY TWO ITEMS you WISH from my STORE!! I have alot coming out this month for you to choose from.. So I hope you can find two items you like!! You have to LINK your templates here in some way to make them count..If you give a SHAPE template away that counts as ONE item, and if you use that SAME template SHAPE you created to make a full blown, dressed .smt template for sharing OR showing here that counts as another ONE item to your 10!!

SHAPES to make these templates are EVERYWHERE on this site and IN your SBM SHAPES FOLDER!! USE them to make your templates!! AND if you have purchased my STORE shapes..you are free to use those in your workups!!

THIS IS ALOT of information ALREADY!! It's a START!! Your questions and answers will be compiled into a CHEAT Sheet of index type cards in template format for you to share, use, remind you of little tricks and tidbits you learn this month about the CUSTOM SHAPES feature in SBM and give you POWER to create great fun SHAPES without going outside of the program to make them!!

I AM EXCITED to work with you on the subject of the "WONDER of SHAPES".

You will be getting free shapes through the challenge and more and more info of tricks to learn about shapes.. Fiona and I have set the stage for shapes this last month..

You will learn:
1) Quality control of your shapes (best format jpg vs png, size and dpi, etc)

2) You will use COLORS instead of grayscale to help find what works best for you ..colors have great contrast to see various dark light scale..WHITE is the image..BLACK is NOT seen parts.

3) Answer lots of questions you may have...like..gosh..can I change the shapes easily to another bigger shape?? YES..and more..

4) ADD lots more SHAPES to your folder in a whole new section of them I call TEMPLATE shapes.

5) Learn to use your PICTURES, grayscale them, and use with your template making process..NEW BLENDING technique!! Advance SHAPES learning.

6) Create a CHEAT sheet to remember your learning!!

7) And have FUN!!!!!FUN!! FUN!!! and MORE!!

I'll be MOVING new furniture in today..Was not planned!! So I'll be looking in on any questions you may have as often as I can today!! We have lots of SHAPES gurus on site that can answer questions if I'm out of range at that moment!!

Many of you are already well versed in SHAPES and I'd love to see you all start running with this!!

HUGGIES!! and LET the SHARE TIME BEGIN!!
WHEEEEEEEE!!!

Speaking of shapes. When I first started I thought a shape had to be black or grey or white to be used. I have since found out pictures and graphics can be used as a a shape for a whole different look and add on.

I used a tractor graphic as a shape on a piece of paper slightly bigger behind a picture which also was in the tractor shape.

I took one of my beautiful vacation pictures of a lighthouse and applied it as a shape to a piece of paper and used as a background. WOW. It amazes me what this program will do.

Really looking forward to learning more about shapes.

Here is a sample of what I have learned on my own about shapes. Same picture 3 different ways.
1) White solid paper, applied same butterfly picture as shape.
2) Dark solid paper, applied same butterfly shape, then added a sold white paper behind shaped paper to bring out the white.
3) Same butterfly picture, framed with white paper and applying one of Donna's frilly frames.
4) Whole page framed with white paper applying a frilly frame shape.

Wow all the different ways to use shapes and I am sure I will learn more and better, easier ways to do this.

PS.I wasn't really trying to create a scrapbook page here ...just playing with shapes.

Can you tell I am excited about this challenge. I have a post in general discussion titled WHY, WHY, WHY from many days ago and I have not received any responses which is very unusual <I probably did not give enough details>.

That post is basically a shape problem/question and so I am confident I will know the answer to my problem when this challenge is finished <or before>. I was doing method number 2 from my butterfly post above on a lighthouse picture (with one extra added step as well). It looks beautfiul on my screen but when I publish my picture I lose the shape. I think it probably has to do with something out of proportion but not sure. Hopefully I will know soon.

being an awkward cuss like i am i had to make mine in two parts :D .....these work better with a background paper put underneath first > use shape 1 > place photos and over lay with shape 2

OK here is mine. Donna - just love this challenge as shape templates are what I use all the time.
Here is mine but then I took it a step further and added some extras. This is how I do nearly all my layouts and the secret to my success or failure. LOL.
I hope lots of our Scrapbook Max family have a go at this challenge as I'm sure if given the chance they will be hooked on shape templates for life.
Donna thanks again for a wonderful challenge.

WOW!!! I'm AMAZED at the speed with which you all have done this already!!

Sorry for LONG GONE period on FIRST day..Furniture is in and WOW!! but the "flu" hit hubby today..and I'm into the last 3 weeks of the "flu" myself..Today was exhausting!! But this is just the ticket to brighten it up!!

Got an email from KPIERCE and MY APOLOGIES!! the link to the freebie template required more than a simple download..you had to register or login to get it..OOOPSS!! I had automatic login with it..It's a favorite site!! So sorry..so here is what I was hoping to get you all to see..

MARION and CARENA are as you can see WAY beyond the novice stage of SHAPES!! So I'll try to show a break down of how they did what they did to all those just learning!! But I PROMISE..when you "GET it"..it will be addicting!! and offer you UNLIMITED play and growth!! Their templates are AWESOME!! but I must ask for as much SIMPLICITY as we can manage for the poor folks that have no idea how you guys went from a simple template to WOW..all the fill in's, etc..BUT folks..You will be able to see how they did all the great stuff soon!!

Here's a picture of the download and it is done in pink colors..with black edging..I FLATTENED the image. I see that KPierce is going to learn that the disappearing shapes may very well be a FLATTEN image problem of some sort..So I'll explain as we go!!

FIRST: GET familiar with the BROWSE button often over looked by the NEWBIES!! You will find it to the LOWER lefthand corner of the EMBELLISHMENT, Paper SCRAPS, and Photos POPUP windows. This template freebie of Tabitha's can be opened in shapes and then you have a choice between using a JPG or PNG for your SHAPE (YOU CAN NOT USE ANY OTHER FORMATS as SHAPES than those two).. Don't have to grayscale it to get a good PUNCH (WHEN I use the term PUNCH..it is because you can look at the CUSTOM SHAPE feature as the equivalent to a TRADITIONAL scrapbooking PUNCH..those single item flowers, corner cutters, etc..)

SECOND: Tabitha's freebie template may have an invisible layer that will not allow it to punch or when punched..it will do the invisible TRICK later!! At first you may not see any problems with it..but it may be more noticeable when you go to ROTATE, MOVE or SIZE the punched item!! SO, lets fix it proper like in SBM...bring the parked template I have downloaded to SHAPES by OPENING my PHOTO or EMBELLISHMENT OR PAPER SCRAP window..JUST go down to the BROWSE button and go hunting through your drive to that SHAPES department..(NOTE: MANY of OUR EXPERT SHAPE Folks..PARK all their stuff in another hard drive, on desktop, etc..and USE that BROWSE feature to keep from loading everything into your SBM folders that would bog it down)
OH..left out IMPORTANT NEWBIE STEP..I've OPENED a SPECIAL "FIX it" ALBUM that contains a BLANK page and added another page at DEFAULT settings of 8x8 200 dpi..You can DELETE this page when PUBLISHED..and always have the FIX it album ready for emergency fix it jobs....GOSH..so much to tell you..but I'm going to try not to overwhelmed you too much!!

OK..the SHAPE is IN..on the left corner of the page..NOW..PULL the RIGHT BOTTOM corner of the SHAPE PIECE and PULL to the RIGHT BOTTOM corner of the PAGE..If it becomes too blurry..RESIZE your page to custom size of 4x4 inches.
NOW..GO to FILE tab at top and CLICK once on PUBLISH..NOW go to IMAGES and DOUBLE CLICK..It will FLATTEN your image into a JPG format..You will have a choice of sizes and quality settings to choose from..I PREFER HIGH-HIGHEST quality and SIZE to MEDIUM-SMALL for single shapes..FOR YOUR TEMPLATE SHAPES You will do best with HIGHEST QUALITY for detailed template with SMALL items on page..and MEDIUM size. WHEN it PUBLISHES..it will show you the published piece..You can go FIND it by going to MY DOCUMENTS:SCRAPBOOKMAX:Published ...look for the name of your FIX it album or whatever album you published from and send your item back to the shapes department under C:SBM:GALLERY:Images:SHAPES: folder you put it in..
NOw try punching that again..and the problem is FIXED!!

END of CHAPTER ONE..TOMORROW..CHAPTER TWO..WE have LOTS of CHAPTERS to do for the month!!

KEEP the juices flowing!! I'm going to have fun using FIONA's GREAT EXAMPLE of SHAPES TEMPLATE TWO PARTER..SHE's another EXPERT that is ADDICTED to shapes and she has been through all the troubleshooting with me for over a YEAR now!! THIS is my Anniversary month in the shop!!

Want to see if I can get our shape gurus to do a ONE STEP template like in the SHOP link..

K Pierce..Hope you have the answer you were looking for!! I haven't looked at your link yet!! but I will when the sunshines again!!

HUGS SCRAPETTES!!
donna

and again..WOW LADIES!! FROM SIMPLE to the VERY COMPLEX..WE HAVE GOT some GREAT ITEMS to SHOW HOW it's DONE!! THANKS BUNCHES!!

I don't get it. I opened a new album and titled it FIX IT with a blank page. Am I adding ANOTHER blank page? Above it says contains a blank page and added another page at default. So I should have 2 blank pages?

YES..You did that PERFECTLY!! What you don't realize is that SBM has to have at least one page in the album..It will not allow you to remove the one left album page. You have to DELETE the album to do that..And to DELETE an album is only possible when you first come into a program and have that CHOICE of open a SAVED or make a NEW..This FIX it album is what I would use if I'm in another album and having trouble with a shape and don't have the luxury of fixing it in another program outside of max...or lets say I need a shape that I don't have in my SBM program and want to make another shape to use in that album I'm working on..You want to be able to use one page that was added to drop your shape into and use the WHOLE page as your shape...CUSTOM size your page as needed..

THEN PUBLish your pages..and yes you will have the blank page show up..but just delete in the published folder..and send the FLATTENED image jpg format to you Shapes folder to replace the goofy shape.. Then go back to your original working album and get the punch you wanted originally from that shape..

You are becoming SHAPE DOCTORS folks!!

My problem has been using too many shapes in my templates so I created a SIMPLE template SHAPE that uses only ONE color for the start..Then I can dress up my template shape once layed out on the paper!!

Here's some examples I want you to look at..it may very well surprise you how very, very simple the layout was to make using ONLY SBM and not another program..

Carena brought out some excellent points in an email to me of some of her frustrations..

Here's some ideas to look at and I want you to take my shape ideas and create something similar to it..I never went outside the box..All effects from just ONE color!! Then I added more shapes to it...

I am so glad we have an entire month to get this right. I am so confused even after reading everything. Donna, can you simplify the instructions. How do we change colors on the jpg image?

pkdoll
03-02-2008, 02:54 PM
Donna I can see where people are getting confused. In your instructions you are talking like everyone understands what you are saying because you are so familiar with what you are trying to explain that things get lost in the translation. Sometimes they just need a step by step example showing what to do and than they can better understand it from there. Just a thought.

I am so glad we have an entire month to get this right. I am so confused even after reading everything. Donna, can you simplify the instructions. How do we change colors on the jpg image?

Question is how do we change colors on the jpg image!!!!
BLESS you..

The color pack are the paper scraps you use to drop on a 8x8 200 dpi (default settings). You pick whatever colors you wish to build your template page..REMEMBER the number one basic rule of thumb when making a SHAPE for SBM..WHITE is what your crisp image will be...gray colors are going to be more vellum like see through..BLACK is Nothing!! I use gray scale colors..but if you use COLORS..you can see your RANGE easier than looking at grays..NOT required to use colors..

Grab a paper scrap and drop on page..THAT instantly gives you a RECTANGLE..You can crop it to any rectangle size..or CUSTOM SHAPE..So here is an example of the process..ALL the basics are in the TUTORIALS..

NOTHING is off limits in your PAPER SCRAPS or BACKGROUNDS for building your template..But your THINKING has to see what this building will accomplish in terms of shapes..START playing..There is no better way to learn than that..

Carena mentioned some frustrations using SHAPES..they slither like snakes when you don't use the EDIT>check the KEEP ASPECT ration box at bottom..THat will keep it in it's original shape..

Once you have created a SHAPED template and PUBLISHED..GO TO NEW PAGE and test it!!
2 ways to TRY IT OUT!!

1a) GO directly to add on page in your created template album
Go to Paper Scraps and find a med to dark solid color with
texture or not..
Click on CUSTOM SHAPE
GO to BROWSE button on bottom left
Hunt for jpg image..My Documents>SCrapbookMax > Published Files> look for album you are in> go to top bar and click on thumbnails in box
Double CLICK on your NEW TEmplate or SHAPE image..
WHALA!! How did you do???

or
2a) Take your Published image and send to C:Program FIles:SBM:GALLERY:IMAGES: SHAPES: put it in a folder you can remember..
Then go back to new album page
Go to Paper Scraps and pick a med-dark color and choose CUSTOM SHAPE
FIND your new template shape and punch..
How does it look???

COPY my stuff to get a feel for choices of colors and the effects you can get from them!!

Here's the color tile I used to to get this template GREEN..
RIGHT CLICK on BLUISH image template
Put in your SBM SHAPES folder..somewhere you can remember
Pick a color med to dark from paper scraps or even a PHOTO!!
Pull the punched image from bottom right box on image to bottom right side of your desired page. THIS IS ONE LAYER..Do DROP SHADOW to give it depth
Drop a picture in or whatever you like with the empty spaces..
PLAY, PLAY, PLAY!!

OK Here is a shape I created to use as a frame for my lighthouse vacation pictures. I like the way it frames the lighthouse. I don't know if this will be very useful for others or not but hopefully someone can use it or learn from it. I have varying shades of gray in the shape to allow see thru elements of the image. I hope this is right.

I uploaded the shape but not sure how to put it in correctly. hmmm. I have to run. I will be back.

HELP
I tried following the distructions...got the image published and reopened . But it still acts like one big shape....not small shapes that I can work with....?

KPierce
03-02-2008, 09:20 PM
Tiffany's Scraps, I hope it is OK for me to try to help. When you publish to an image it will create one big shape not different small shapes...that is a one click quick page. Place a piece of paper on your page, then go to the properites of the paper and find the shape you made, then add picture/s.

If you export as template then you could have individual pieces to change within the page depending on how you designed the page.

grannywin

YES! You can teach an OLD dog a new trick. I finally figured this lesson out. That image of the layout with the finished green layout really helped. Maybe we ought to extend this challenge to include a screen shot of our template. That might be a help to others.

But I am still confused by how Marion and Carena used various designs and colors in their layout. Is that lesson two?

Here are my steps (hope they are correct):
1. create a layout without text using shades of black, gray, or colored patterns for the paper scraps.
2. use plain white paper for the photo spaces.
3. Publish as a High and Full size image.
4. Go to My Document>ScrapbookMax>Published Files>
5. Find the jpg file of your template.
6. Move to C:>programs file>ScrapbookMax>Gallery>Shapes
or where you store your shapes files.
7. Open Scrapbook Max, new scrapbook, blank page
8. Bring in a paper scrap of an color
9. Check the shape box and find your template in the shape box and finish loading the paper.

By JUPITER you all are getting it!!

This is something DIFFERENT from what you all are used to!! These are bigger shapes to keep them from blurring as you enlarge to full page size..You can make them at 4x4 size at 300 dpi and get the same results..but it's easier to make on 8x8 so you see your template creation easier..

KPierce gave me a great idea to use a screen capture tutorial..but I forgot my husband gave my camtasia..So I'll see if I can come up with better visual representations for you..

You are FANTASTIC at quick learning!! Whatever helps you learn it POST..

As for uploading your new one step templates..simply

1) Go to REPLY of this thread
2) Go down the screen and click on MANAGE ATTACHMENTS or click on paper clip on top of message screen
3) Hit the BROWSE button...NOT UPLOAD at top of Upload screen
4) Find your image by hunting through the drives to My Documents>ScrapbookMax>Published Files> your folder> click on your shape
5) Then press the UPLOAD button.
6) If it is too big..MAX will kick it out..
7) REPUBLISH to a smaller more convenient High Quality Medium size..

SO VERY IMPRESSED with all your designs folks!!

WHEEE , I was beginning to worry!!!!

Keep the questions coming!! and PLAY!! BEst way to learn is PLAYING!! Talk to your program..It listens!!LOL

Donna - you poor poor girl - you must be just about going grey overnight with all this but I think we are all seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I must admit folks - I cheated and am learning along with you all as when I did my page - I did it with Photoshop CS2 (BIG BUCK$ program)- which I'm very familair with. I agree Paula.

Donna, I have made some shapes in the past. But Paula made a good point. Maybe you could make your explanations in steps like this:

1:
2:
3:

With the directions being so long, I think separating the steps may help. And maybe like Granny stated at one point, explain like you are telling a 2 year old (like me (not granny)) :D I love your work and this is an excellent challenge for everyone.

I'm with you crops. I read it over and over and I just don't understand where I'm supposed to start. Do I just make a layout with nothing but grayscale papers? How do I know which block should be white, black or gray? Or does it matter? Am I really as dumb as I sound to myself?

This is what happens when you allow an intellectual giant to host a challange. They forget the they are regular Einsteins, and we are just mere peons!!!!!

But that's ok, when I grow up, I want to be brillian like AutisticWonder!!

Marion

I must have done it wrong too. I read and reread and then still didn't get it, so as usual I did it my own way:D
This is how I did it.
The way I changed it into a SBM template is:
Since the template we downloaded is in psd format,
1. I first opened it as a Psd file,
2. then I save each layer individual layer as a png file.
3. I bring each layer into SBM
4. turn each layer into a shape (white on black background"
5. and export as a jpg.
6. Put into shapes folder.
7. Bring everything back to SMB.
8. From there you can recolor or change picture. This may be the long way around, but it is the only way I know how to do it with SBM. I hope the explanation is not to complicated. It is one thing to do it, but another thing to explain how you did it.

I have been playing with shapes a lot since this challenge started and creating some really ugly pages in the process but I am learning. Trying to recognize/remember which shade of paper will give which shade/depth of color when added to a piece of paper. Here is one of my shape pages I have been playing with. It does show the various shades of gray and how they translate on the paper nicely but not sure how really usefull it would be to anyone. I think you might be trying to make it too hard. Donna has mentioned various stages coming up but I am focusing on only using other shapes to create my own shapes and quick pages for now.

KPierce - this I think is the result on just one paper over your shapes in multiply shades of grey - the final idea is to use your shapes to layer in lots of different papers which gives a template effect which you can use over and over again with different kits and papers and each time giving a different layout each time as per mine and Marions examples. Same template but different looks. This might be the next step in Donna's grand plan I think - looking forward to this step with everyone else Donna.

I hope I've explained this OK. Like I say I'm used to PSD templates in Photoshop but Scrapbook Max will produce the same sort of thing only goes about it a little differently and the price difference in programs is HUGE. Well done ScrapbookMax. The more you learn about your program the more inpowered you are to produce some fabulous layouts and also the more fun you can have. Just takes time and patience and a little persistance but it will all pay off in the end.
Kind regards from Carena :)

ok, here is my attempt. I don't know if I did it the way it was suppose to be done or not. It is actually more of a quick page. The whole page is one shape, you pick your paper and you drop in the picture. I added a brad/button that I made in each of the diamond shapes after I added my picture, and added the wording. I hope the link works for the template.

The picture is from my trip this past week to pick up my mom. We did a side trip the the Sky Line Drive and Blue Ridge Mountains.

Marion

Marion, my question are;
* in step 1 & 2, did you open it in PS ?
* in step 3,4,5,6 , did you do that for every layer. So you have to repeat this step several times, depending on the quantity of layers ?
* step 7 has to be repeated too ?
Is this what you mean, or am I wrong?
Thanks so much, I'm very eager to know about this shapes business

BLESS you ALL for your staying in there!!

KPierce gave me an idea to do a video tutorial..Hubby bought the Camtasia video maker..So I played with it yesterday and made a tutorial but it was 45 minutes long..and I blew it at the onload side of it..It's gone..in cyberspace somewhere..

So I'll make another attempt today..

BUT ...looks like you guys are getting the idea!!

For now I'll let you sift through the tuts and info already given..

The tut takes you through everything step by step..slowly..

HUGS,

Yep, I know what I did Carena, :), and we are supposed to create 10 of those shapes/quick pages to get freebies.... I LIKE FREEBIES. . . especially freebies from Donna. I wonder how many more frilly frame sets there are!!!

Donna, If I downloaded the original template request, in SBM that file too would only be a quick page...much like I created but BETTER design because these people <like you> are designers. ;)Yes, in Photoshop the designers could do so much more with that download but it is not possible to change out each individual piece of THAT template in SBM, right?

But we are going to learn how we can create those kind of templates <later>.

I think I get it. I think I know where we are headed in the challenge. But I want my freebies first. :p

Thanks, KPierce. Ok. I see where the black will be the lightest and the white will be the darkest areas. So I can pick and choose from what I want the lightest area to be and the darkest area to be. Ok. I'll try the layout first. I'll try to figure out how to make the layout into a shape later. :p Good thing this was a MONTH-long challenge. Guess I'm more like Granny than I thought. :D

How do you open the template if it is in JPEG form? I feel like im so lost. Or can you open the template in JPEG???

Tiffanys Scraps,
I'm just as lost as you are. I don't have photoshop so I can only open the free template as a png or a jpeg and neither one has anything that looks like layers to me. It's just one big object. I guess I'll leave this sort of thing to the pros because I am just not getting it. Good luck.

1)Add a new scrapbook page,
2)add a piece of paper as a "photo" not as a background to that page
3)Size the paper to the correct size on your page
4) Double click the paper and choose "custom shape" and browse to find and choose the jpg template you downloaded.
5)Click OK.
6)Click OK. Now your paper should have various shades of your original paper.

The designers threw you off by doing some fancy stuff..Think SIMPLE..What they have done can't be done in your SBM program..This challenge is for SBM program use..not PS or any outside program..Not necessary..What I'm hoping you guys are going to do is READ the SHAPES tut first..Then the Mask Layouts. It has visuals.

I've finished the 30 Minute tutorial that will be VERY helpful to newbies and those that have never actually made there templates in SBM before..only used an outside program to bring stuff in..I make most of my shapes OUTSIDE the program but so many shapes that I've been able to do templates in SBM easily.

Don't make this so hard...If you have no idea what SHAPES are or how to PUNCH a CUSTOM shape from your photos and your paper scraps..then we need to start there..In the video tutorial it does everything visually for you.

You learn WHERE to put your shapes
How to PUBLISH (make your OWN shapes)
How to find your newly acquired shapes
Some DO's and DON'ts with shapes
Learn the KEEP ASPECT ratio feature for paper scraps
See the gray difference compared to white images
BROWSE feature button use
and several more in the video..

I have to try to make it a challenge to those in PS type programs..They can make shapes to use in the SBM program to build a simple one step shape template..

What you won't get is more advanced stuff like using 2 and 3 layers in shapes with various colors and such..That is too far for some right now..That requires LOTS of thoughts and planning.. Fiona has done a great job with demonstrating that more advanced feature..But..you are right..I'm so used to shapes, shapes, and more shapes..it is my language!! Sorry..
The tutorial is high quality and still downloading to a web site to view it..

I feel really bad for some of our veterans who still don't know how to find the SBM folders. This will help!! LOVE visuals!!My boys were raised on them!!

As soon as link is established and WORKS..I'll put it here for you and see if that makes much more sense!!

Thanks for your efforts!! KPierce has GOT it..SUE too!! Use your PS programs strictly for making shapes so you don't make the poor newbies ever more confused!!

Hang in there..Yeah..THANK goodness we have a month to do this!! LOL..

You guys are die hard scrappers!!

HUGS,
donna

OK I think I like this design the best so far that I have tried. It reminds me a little of the template Donna wanted us to download. I have learned paper choice really makes a difference for the quick page templates end look and whether you like it or not. This paper seemed to do well on this template. I had a solid color paper that worked well also. I added a transparent white paper on the areas I wanted to journal. Do you think the heart would look better not rotated?

Ok I figured it out. I guess I thought I was suppose to make something out of the template we downloaded. Well I made a whole mess of shaped templates. They are in a zipfile, just unzip and put into your shape folder. I made each shape twice. I made the regular and then the negative so you can use them either way. There are a total of 14 shapes.
Donna I hope I did it right this time!

I live near the northern most edge of Sky Line Dr. Well, not far from it. My men work in that area all the time. It's a beautiful drive across the very top of the mountain range, hence the name Sky Line DR. And 20 deer is nothing in this area. I have 7 regulars in my front yard every morning! Ha ha! And if you'd see all the deer lying by the side of the road, you'd know they don't care about cars, either. They usually jump right into your path! Great photos, Sue!

Lily...it's sooooooo BEAUTIFUL!! AWESOME for FIRST??? SUCH an IMPRESSIVE bunch!!

ANOTHER SHAPES TIP:
Whenever you make a shape..PLEASE come up with at least a
3 digit something to put INFRONT of your image name..like
mine for FREEBIES is d27 shapeoverlay6.jpg..This will keep us
from overwriting another with same name AND it
will more easily help us IDENTIFY the person donating it for
easy credit reference.

AND if you forget..WE CAN always type in your name to the front when downloading by highlighting the jpg image name and going to the front of it and typing your name to it.. like I just did!! Want to give you all credit!!

I'm so EXCITED!!

HUGS!!

I sure have been playing with shapes a LOT. I redisigned my original shape so that I can turn it any which way I want and the shape still matches up like a quilt. I have created many versions. I think this is the final 3 I used. I have been sick so I have had a lot of time to play. My sister tells me the quilt prints beautifully. She has a printer that will print 12x12. Shapes was the key on this one for sure.

Ok, I finally got part one done. I found it very hard for some reason but finally came up with something. I'm movin' on to part two as I've been behind but I'll go back to the first assignment later. Just added photos, glass globes and the journal area to the masked layout.

In a template or a shape with a hole for a photo I used to struggle with getting the photo cropped exactly the right size in the right place. If you add a paper scrap FIRST to be the exact shape and size where a photo is to be placed, then when you double click the paper and choose change picture, go find your picture and next you will see an 'adjust to fit box' with the paper shape box outline on top of the picture showing the exact size you need the picture to be and you can move that box around to the correct / best placement on your picture.

I discovered this easier way and wanted to share in case you haven't already learned it. It is much quicker and easier <at least for me>

Just a question. I downloaded the brushes set. I've seen "brushes" other places to download but never knew exactly what they were or if they would work with SBM. Did you modify this file for SBM or will they all work this same way?

angelwithin
03-09-2008, 09:55 AM
brushes are used in other graphics programs like cs2/3 photoshop, paintshop pro etc

basically they are used like a paint brush which you can make a shape image with in that program.

Here's is the template for my layout. Another question......the frame I would not save as template, correct? Is it now an overlay? Or is it just a shape? How would I make it an overlay? ( Ok probably a dumb question but my mind just isn't working) Also, I did the frame at 8 x 8 default just like always. Should I have made it a smaller size?

Well, Sorry about this but I forgot when you make a template you have to take it out and put it in it's own scrapbook or you get everything in that scrapbook. So now you have the grayscale layout, the colored layout w/ place holders for pics and the finished frame. Oh well, does this count as 3????? (rotfl) AND because I was playing with these in the Fix it album, the front page for the screenshot is a blank page! Sheesh! I'm such a dummy.

Hello everyone, I started out trying to make this as a template, got frustrated and ended up just making a layout, I'm not sure where I went wrong at. Looking at this layout, can someone help me figure out how to do the template. I haven't even started the 2nd phase of this challenge yet, still a little hung up. Thank you for your help and shapes. The acknowledgements for this layout are in the gallery post. Thanks again.

Here is my brush overlay, I'm changing the papers for the overlay and the background and it really give different effects.

The template is for the 3rd one (dark brown), because I've changed it from no. 1 to no.2 and finally to no 3
Hope this is right:confused::)

03-10-2008, 08:29 AM
Ok I figured it out. I guess I thought I was suppose to make something out of the template we downloaded. Well I made a whole mess of shaped templates. They are in a zipfile, just unzip and put into your shape folder. I made each shape twice. I made the regular and then the negative so you can use them either way. There are a total of 14 shapes.
Donna I hope I did it right this time!
The attached thumbnails are just a few samples samples.

OK Marion, I have a few questions on this if you could help me? purty please?? When the openings for the pictures are close together like the hearts and ovals, how do you get the pics in so they don't overlap each other? I know how to crop (don't laugh, I do know how to crop, hehehe) but I just can't seem to get them to fit. Some layouts or templates, sorry not sure which to say at times, has a white sheet to click and the pics are the correct size, is that coming later on in the challenge, I think maybe I'm getting ahead of myself and making this harder than I should. I would like to be able to do that, I've been using the tutorials, but I guess I'm a little slow on learning this for some reason.

Thank you all for all the help you put out here for us newbies and thank you all for such beautiful work!! Hopefully, I'm getting there!

OH..I PUT TWP in front of your downloads so they won't overwrite someone elses AND to identify you easier when I go to give you credit!!!

OMAJO...WAY TO GO!! DID GREAT with the COLOR combos!!
Each piece counts as one!! And GREAT job putting your JO id in each!!

O2B...I use those as your initials and noticed you had some questions!! We must have written our replies at the same time!!LOL

1) is the frame a frame, overlay or template?? It is whatever you want it to be. SHAPES are AWESOME for versatility!! They can be used as frame or overlay or template if you like!!

2) Yes you can make it smaller whenever you do them at 300 dpi.. They skew up to the 12x12 size without losing the quality!! Just do everything at HIGHEST quality when making them small..

3) Experiment and PLAY!! You all are tickling me senseless!!
WAY TO GO!! and more to come on intermediate level!! Looks like TWPCLERK is there already!! NICE effects!! LOVE them!!

Yippie LADIES!!

autisticwonder
03-10-2008, 04:31 PM
Yes Twpclerk!! You got the idea for now!! We will go into more detail along the way!! Next tutorial will add more to it!! WAY TO GO!!

and..the question you had for Marion..about the HOW TO put your pictures in oval and HEART..You need SHAPES to do those. WE have the oval and heart shapes that will probably work for those in SBM.. You will need to crop them to get the right shaped punch.. The tutorial on SHAPES tells you to square your photos in cropping to get a good punch!! Play around with it..It does require playtime..If you don't get it..don't worry I'll cover in next tutorial!! Cropping!! HUGS!!

I don't know if this counts as a shape or not, but here goes. I used a jpg image of a quilt block pattern from Christina Carl (quilterscornerclub.tripod.com) to make the shape. I had searched everywhere for a small single engine plane and found none, and I quilt, so I thought this was a creative combination of my husband's interests and mine. Everything else is from the stuff that came with Scrapbook Max. I noticed some folks have links to their stuff in their posts. I can't figure out how to do that, sorry.

[QUOTE=autisticwonder;93620]YES!!! Love it!! Pilotswife!! The texturing is AWESOME!! GREAT backdrop!!!

I wish I could say I did the texturing but I didn't. It was leftover from the fabric patterns after I took the original color photo and inverted the colors and made the black and white. I had never even heard of inverting colors until I stumbled onto it in microsoft paint. I don't have photoshop so I have to make do.

That is encouraging to all of us that only use SMB. You are one good stacker, cropper, etc.

For some reason I can't view the latest two tutorials, even though I had no problems with the first one on shapes. I downloaded both shockwave and flash into both of my computers and neither one could open the videos. and to make it even scarier, after I installed flash and shockwave my computer said they weren't there. After repeatedly "installing" these invisible programs, I even had my husband try it because he used to be a computer support tech and he was just as perplexed as I am. I hope no one else is having problems.

I experience the same trouble as you, I have download adobe shockwave a few times, but still couldn't open Donna's tut. Then luckily my son came last night, he said that shockwave is a 'plug in' (??????? whatever it is....),
so we have to open it with internet explorer. just open internet explorer and drag Donna's tut to there. And it works,.....
Hope this might help you pilotswife.

I'm using Toby's photo which I shaped with one of Sue Castan shapes to make a shape.
Then on the next one, is the layout with Toby's shape, with other shapes made from embies.

I'm so sorry you all are having trouble with the download..It took a long time to upload them as well..So here is a link to direct view the latest one..INTERMEDIATE level..Was hoping that being able to download them would be helpful to you..First time with this sort of tutorial stuff..LOTS to learn!!

http://www.screencast.com/t/2SSEbLGtXC

Hopefully that will work for you!!

If not..I'll try another link..

THANKS Omajo for all your efforts to figure out how to make these work..The directions say just need shockwave to play it and don't give me anymore specifics than that..Can't test it on my computer because I have the program that made it and it automatically kicks in..

BLESS you all for your patience!!

HAPPY ST. PATRICK's DAY!!!!

NOTE...Omajo says if you OPEN INTERNET EXPLORER then click on the download..it will work..THANKS GIRL for the INFO!!

The downloads work for me fine. If you right mouse click on the filename you downloaded, then choose open with Internet Explorer. It opens the file and plays the file <for me>.

Thanks Donna. They are great.

shockwave loads as a plug in to internet explorer, (not as a program), so download shockwave from adobe (if you don't already have it), download the tute files, then right click and open with internet explorer. This should make the files work. Thank you for the tutes, I am a little late to participate in the challenge, but really enjoyed the tutes.

OK SO I'm frusrated! I am oogled too and probably making it harder than it is. I've finally got time to sit here and this is what I've come up with so far...
I am not sure how to insert pictures, the paper is still light on the background so do I need to make my squares completely black?
What do you think?

Howdy and WELCOME..the month is only HALF over and my die hard faithfuls are now PRO SHAPERS!!! Lily...LOVE the criss crosses!!!! KPierce..thanks always for your wonderful support..Omajo..you go GIRL!! THanks so much for the tips and Nanwu..YEAH!! Good to see you and thanks for the help!!
Sue..hopefully you will be around this weekend..Hubby wants to go out of town with the family...EEK..nothing like PLANNING the trip!! HUM..Will probably be gone Friday thru Sunday folks..Hoping Fiona will be checking on ya!!

OK Ellandriel!!
FIRST, WOW!!! GREAT job on your template!! Looks WONDERFUL!!
THe question you had about picture spot..You can put a black rectangle/square/oval/circle..if you like to designate your pictures or you can just leave them out and allow the user of the template to plop a picture on the template as is..Whenever you do use a black area..it will be totally transparent/see through when you punch it..
You can always look at your background as another source for colorizing your template shape too.. What I'm hoping you all will learn ..is how your SBM features work..so you can use your imagination when you see something you like..THINK..Hey, I can do that in Max!! MAy take more effort..but the more you know about your program the more satisfied you'll be!! It does a lot!! Majority of us don't realize just how much it can do!!

Keep up the fantastic work!!!

HUGS!!! Oh.. I'll be linking some more oldie items later..

This month has had the BEST challenges. I've truly learned a ton of new things and stepped outside my comfort zone to experiment with all these new things. Thanks to EVERYONE here. Thanks to Donna and Fiona for teaching us and thanks to all of you who, like me, didn't know we could "create" in SBM. You've all learned and shared what you've learned with all of us and I, for one, am glad! Thanks a ton!

Fiona will be handling this challenge this weekend..BLESS her!! As if she isn't busy enough!! I'll be in Kentucky visiting my hubby's family..The kids are so disappointed it's only for the weekend!!

It's so fun to learn how Fiona does some of her fun in the shapes features!! Just when we thought we shared all our knowledge with each other we both find something new about the other in the program!! TOO FUN!! Been great fun for me to see all the enthusiasm from our NEWBIES!! Was afraid I lost everyone at the start!! Lesson learned!! I'll be wiser next time!!

HUGS for the moment scrappeteers!!

Here's another page I did. I thought I would put pictures behind the letters but I must have used too light a gray background because you could see the extra outline around the photos. So I used a lighter green in back of the darker and I left the photo a little bigger than the frame so you could see what I mean about seeing the outline through the green. Not sure how to fix it except to change the gray scale to a darker gray. Nope that would be backwards, wouldn't it. I'd use a lighter gray. Hmmm.....that was a pretty light gray already. I guess I'd have to use a darker paper scrap?

Sorry I haven't done any for a while, I've been working on other things. Here is one with the word Spring on it.

This works best with a dark paper. If you have a light paper that you like, you can use it but will have to darken it for it to show up.

Here is another, but it worked out better doing it as a template rather than a shape. So I attached the link for the template and you can colorize it how you wish. (The way the frames are overlapped, it doesn't work for a shape).

Just realized, I used one of the shapes from the Frilly Frames. I hope that was ok.

Finally had a chance to view the videos, Donna. That was a great learning tool. Wish we could get more designers to use that technique to teach us new tricks. I am busy working on a few more pages, but had to tell you the best thing I am taking out of this project--texture templates. I started a file of just textures since I see how easy it is to add the color to the page. Woops! I think that was Fiona's lesson, but I saw the texture file idea in your video.

Ok, I think we were supposed to play around with word art. I don't have a program that will make transparent items, so I used an already made word art. I'm not sure if I was supposed to create a word art or just play around with using some. So here's my layout. The word art is from Bethany Harty and the papers and embellishments are from Angela Young. I didn't create the frillies either, but it was my first time using them and I spent way too much time resizing and positioning and playing around, but it was fun.
