View Full Version : You're on a desert island...

;) Okay, folks.
You're on a desert island. For some reason, you have a television, DVD player, and stereo. (Let's say you also have monkey butlers to assure that you always have some chewy, chewy cocoa beans to subsist on). You can bring your favorite ONE of each:
1 movie
1 Album (music - not scrapbook!)
1 book
Which movie, album, and book do you bring?
Karin :)
P.S. You also have Scrapbook MAX. Let's not be cruel...

I'd burn the TV. For an album I'd probably take The Clash "Sandanista" or a Bob Marley "best of". For a book I'd take a gigantic textbook on music or art, the largest one I could find. :)
What about your picks Karin?
Karin

All right - fair is fair.
Movie - Lawrence of Arabia
AWE-SOME movie, thank you David Lean. Not just a bio-pic. About identity, and what is the self?.... And, since it's four hours long by the time you finish it, you can watch it again and it won't feel like you've just seen it. More of a commitment than a movie, in a way.( I really want to smuggle Napoleon Dynamite along, but that would be cheating.)
Book - Lord of the Rings (all three books - that's fair - one story!)
Love it, and by the time you finish it, you can go back and read it again and it won't feel like you just read it.
Album - tough tough tough. I'll have to say Joni Mitchell's "Court and SparK". it's a story in an album, at least I've devised a story out of her songs. I think it might be our Joni at her peak.
Okay folks - your turn!
Karin :)

I love Joni. Her music, her painting, her writing, her ideas. One of the truly brilliant artists of our time. :)
:) ok here goes, was a hard decision to make :)
MOVIE -Pirates of the Carribean- ( a huge Johnny Depp fan here & the movie is a lot of fun.
BOOK - Lord of the Rings, still the best book I have read & agree, its an epic in itself.
ALBUM-Josh Groban, either his Closer CD or his Live At The Greek, I could listen to both all day & he has a voice of an angel, find him very soothing.:)
Desmond

MOVIE - Probably 'Lord of the Rings' (any of them) -- so I can keep in mind that no matter how screwed I am, at least I'm not a hobbit.
ALBUM - Any mix CD from my car -- I've yet to find a whole album I like, and if stranded, I want EVERY song to count!
BOOK - The world's largest book (http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/ptech/12/16/largest.book.ap/) -- that way, at night, I can curl up and be warm while it's burning!

MOVIE - Well, first off, I'd smuggle about 10 other DVD discs in my NYPD Blue box set... And let's not forget the included posters so I can have some cute lady cops to look at;)
MUSIC - Then I'd burn a music DVD that holds about 1600 hours of MP3's.. That'll keep me going for a little while. Sometimes it pays to be a geek!
BOOK - I'd bring the Internal Revenue Service 2006 Tax Code manual, it's nice and thick and will make great kindling (just like Desmond suggested) since I'm not going to read it anyway :D

Very good picks, people.
And some VERY clever interpretations of the definition of 1 album, 1 movie, etc.
Okay - who's next?
Karin :)
Movie: Is the player a DivX player? If so I'd bring a disc with Southpark Simpsons and Family guy.
Standard DVD: By Karins logic of a series counting as one choice, I'd bring Star Wars I, II, III, IV, V, VI. Thats over 12 hours of Jedi fun.
Music: Metallica "Justice for All".. If I'm stranded then at least I can rock out
Book: Probably something that I have not read yet because I am a slow reader.. maybe Davinchi or Lord of the Rings since you actually get three books

Well in that case I get to take a trailer full of skateboards and an indestructible mini-ramp. So there. Ha! [skate, skate, skate] Top *that* Tolkien.
And also I'm changing mine to a dessert island. [droool]
Karin

Like those old Dairy Queen commercials with the chocolate mountains and rivers of caramel and banana split boats...I volunteer to be stranded!
mmmmmm...
Sure Corey, since you' ve smashed your tv, you can have the skateboards...
Karin :)

OK, I'm a little late, but did someone say chocolate mountains?? :p All I read before that has just become a blur!
Karin

Marnie - the fun starts at the beginning of the thread. Here's the summary:
You're on a desert island (NOT dessert island, shucks :p )
You can bring one movie, one book, and one album. What do you choose...
Karin :)
Marnie
06-19-2006, 08:35 PM
Ya, I read the thread, but was finding your questions really tough. So, I was easily distracted by the mention of chocolate. It made me think..... a desert recipe book, the movie "Chocolat", and some sultry jazz. ;)
Marion
06-19-2006, 09:13 PM
I would like to be on a "DESERTED" island for a while, so I would have some time to scrap!

Hee! Poor Karin. You should offer free cookies with every reply. You want to see a group of people take this thing seriously just put a few cookies on the table and boy-oh-boy! :D
Cookies are the only *true* international currency IMO.
Jessica
06-20-2006, 04:27 PM
free cookies ?? okay, I'll answer seriously:
movie = Lord of the Rings Triology
cd = afi - sing the sorrow
book = hard to chose, but I would have to say Ulysses by James Joyce, because you have to read it a billion times in order to start understanding, so I'll never get tired of reading it.
Jessica
06-20-2006, 04:30 PM
uhm... I just answered your poll, and when I really think about it, being on that island with those three choices seems very appealing to me. It would totally be heaven (but I would have to bring my cat and my bf, and then I could remain there for eternity).
Karin
06-20-2006, 05:32 PM
Awesome, Jess - I agree, that would make things complete!
All right folks - following Corey's suggestion - virtual Oreos are available to the next one who posts in this thread...
Karin :)
Marion

From desert to dessert to oreos...
I guess it's a logical progression...
Great post, Marion. Everyone here is so "sweet"...

I was extremely surprised how badly Italy played against the US. I think they will squeak through to round two though. The Czechs are going to have a tough time tomorrow. :)
Jessica
06-21-2006, 08:51 PM
they'd better be good, cuz I bought my dad the italy FIFA official t-shirt and, y'know, nobody wants to wear the t-shirt of a loser team.. Italy is supposed to be a good team, I hope they win!
Corey
06-21-2006, 09:41 PM
They are a good team. That was just a weird game. Some weird calls. Some weird plays. The lone goal the US did register to force the 1-1 tie was actually scored by an Italian player against his own net. :)
Not like I really know though. I don't follow professional sports. I just happened to catch that one game by pure fluke.

You're right Corey & Jessica, US and rep Checa wasn't easy team but we got it!!!! i think that Italy's team are playing really hard and giving the best , also because the football here have a lot of problems last weeks, i dont know if you heard it but 5 teams of A seria are going to serie b o c because the fixed the games to win or something like these so for these reason too they want to play as best they can to return us the loyalty and be so proud of them and of the italian footbal
now we have to play with the australia will be hard, they have an excellent team so let's see what happen on monday
Forza Azzurra!!!!
Ciao

I asked my wife this question and she said:
movie: Castaway (so you could see how to survive on an island)
book: a survival manual (even better!)
album: something by Corey Hart (I forget the reason why at the moment)
Marion
06-29-2006, 12:52 PM
Smart woman you are married to Brett!
Marion
Karin

I love the survival theme, Lorne- very practical. As for Corey Hart...your wife isn't worrried that the CRTC wouldn't approve of a non-Canadian choice on a desert island, I hope...(you Canucks surely know what I mean).
Anyway, great picks - keep 'em coming!
Karin  (wearing my "sunglasses at night")

Heh, wouldn't he still have his Canadian citizenship, since he was born in Montreal...? (Although he now lives in the Bahamas I think.)
Karin
06-30-2006, 09:03 AM
Yeah - he's still Canuck. I meant is that why your wife chose him - (and avoided a non-Canuck crooner...) :p :p
Karin :)

Oh, heh :)
We were watching one of those "the year is 1984" music video shows on the weekend, and she was talking about having Corey Hart posters all over her room back then...so maybe she just said that to tease me?
