Here's some more of the trompe L'Oeil mural that covers the entire wall of the room and also the ceiling... it's hard to photograph because you can only see one section at a time
I don't know whats happened with this one... it should be the cats but the close up of the cows eyes comes up???

Moonbeam... I'm speechless!!! If you can believe that from me. These are trully magnificent. Now that I see your work, I recognize what they are. My closest friend does this kind of painting, she just never called it that. She had done a lot of this through out her own house. Like you, she does truly beautiful work.
I'm going to ask her to send me some pictures of her house, so I can share them with you. I think you will enjoy it. I'm so grateful to you for sharing this, and the templates you have made are awesome.
I'm learning so much from ya all. Thank you, thank you so much.

Yep I just had another look through this in the cold light of day. I'm simply amazed. That would be a dream come true for me to have my home painted like that. This is definitely one of the coolest things I have ever seen in my entire life. You're off the map Moonbeam, this mural is too much. :)
I'm absolutley not exaggerating when I say that I genuinely prefer your art to some pieces I've seen by old masters because it's infinitely more engaging. And clever. This is top notch stuff.

Man oh man, it's amazing how you completely transformed that room. Really makes me rethink the whole concept of function within a living space.
Moonbeam
05-28-2006, 07:59 PM
In one of these you can see where the "stone wall" is painted and how it finishes three quarters of the way up the wall and how it appears that you can see outside over it ..and the birds sitting on the wall.
The corners of the room which recede ( obviously as corners do) are opainted to trick the eye into seeing the supporting pillar "coming out" and the creeper made to appear that it goes behind the ledge ( Cornice)
One day I will probably paint it out and go back to having "normal" walls and ceiling ..when I get sick of it.. which is why I have phographed it , so I will always have a memory of it.

Dang that's cool. Now for the inevitable hounding:
1. What type of paint is that?
2. How did you prepare the surface(s)?
3. Is it fixed (coated) with anything?
4. How long did it take you?
5. Did you plan it out in advance and do prep sketches, etc?
6. How is the paint/color holding up against the elements?

I have an artist friend of mine that does lots of murals and such...his kid's bedroom is "sea-animal scape"... Dolphins, sea lions, turtles, etc... I'll see if I can find the photo he sent me...

I have an artist friend of mine that does lots of murals and such...his kid's bedroom is "sea-animal scape"... Dolphins, sea lions, turtles, etc... I'll see if I can find the photo he sent me...
When I first read a folkart magazine and tried it (10 years ago) I just found it so easy and I painted everything in sight... I painted on old chests , cupboards, cans, watering cans , milk urns, frypans, boxes...you name and I sold them in shops for quite a while but with art and cratft the thime it takes never earns you much ....I was working for about $8 an hour... but I absolutely loved painting so I did it any way.
Then I started teaching others.. I held classes in my rumpus room for quite a while but I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as painting myself...
When I discovered murals and sort of trompe L'oeil I did get offers of work and I did a few.. I marbled Pillars, "woodgrained" a chipboard staircase and did murals but I was so nervous painting for others that I hated it... I don't have the confidence to feel like I can charge the prices that are the going rate... A tropme L'oiel mural ( detailed area) will cost you $100 Au per square foot .... I guess I've never had that sort of money and I would feel like I was ripping someone off with a fee like that so I'd do a whole wall for $100...dumb hey! But that's me..I'll never be rich but I would rather keep the things I LOVE doing as "MY" thing not something I do for money...it just spoils it for me! So I am working in a Private dipensary in the Nursing home team( I'm a drug dealer Hehehe)
I would LOVE to see some of your friends murals...please show us!

Dang that's cool. Now for the inevitable hounding:
Dang??? hehehe is that an american saying ( are you in USA or canada?) The only time I have heard Dang is in a cowboy movie "dang Nab it!"
1. What type of paint is that?
Anything I can find in acrylic... Detail and special colours I mix with acrylic folk art paint but such a big area I just used cheapo house paint - just plain wall paint.. I scabbed from friends sheds etc.... I had some tints to make my own colours too.
2. How did you prepare the surface(s)?
Prepare?? what's that? I'm a slacko when it comes to preparing anything .. I didn't!! As you see I am not a professional
3. Is it fixed (coated) with anything?
The only part I coated was the little mouse in the brick cavity and the stone wall by the door simply because EVRYONE that comes here has to touch it and feel it.. so I thought with everyone running their hands over it ..it would wear off or get dirty so I used a flat estapol floor varnish, that's all! I ccan wash the whole lot anyway just as you wash a wall.
4. How long did it take you?
It took a few months of a bit here and a bit there ..I painted whenever I had a spare moment...I did get a sore neck doing the high bits and the ceiling.. I didn't have Michael Angelo's scaffold
5. Did you plan it out in advance and do prep sketches, etc?
No.. Only in my mind...The animals I used a folk art pattern to trace the outline ( I can't draw for nuts) and the stone blocks had to be worked out and measured -I used a builders string line for that... but the other stuff just sort of unfolded as it grew
6. How is the paint/color holding up against the elements?
I painted it about 4 years ago now and it still looks the same but it is indoors and the outside porch wall is very sheltered ..gets no rain but I hose oout there all the time It was my first go at anything like that and apart from a few murals I did for others I have never done it since and sometimes I look at it and have no idea how I did it.. I wonder sometimes if I could even do it again? Probably once I started I could... I did have a stone spiral staircase on another wall at one stage but I painted over it because I wanted to put furniture there and it looked stipid with chairs in front of it....But even that I just had to try to see if I could paint it.. I must try and find a picture of that... I did photograph it before painting it out.THere are so many things in life I want to learn and try but there is just not enough time is there. I want to learn more about Phot editing next for my scrapbooking

Dang??? hehehe is that an american saying ( are you in USA or canada?) The only time I have heard Dang is in a cowboy movie "dang Nab it!"
Actually that one's "Dag nab it". Dang is definitely American/Canadian slang. Basically it means "WOW!" in this context. I'm in Canada - Calgary, home of the Calgary Stampede. :)
Anything I can find in acrylic...
Also my fave. Easy to work with, great colors, and flexible functionality.

Well I'm a Photoshop guy of some experience and there's lots more around here too so just let us know if you have any questions, and before you know it you'll be zooming along. Since you already understand all that stuff like color values, contrast/tone, lighting, etc. it should be a breeze for you, i.e. it's just a matter of working out the semantics of your chosen software. These days a lot of the popular photo editing packages do quite a good job of automating a lot of repetitive tasks too, so the main thing is just figuring out which software will work best for you. From there it's all downhill. :)
I like your approach toward money. I'm the same way. I've never really had any to speak of so it has no influence on how I live. I may live to regret that but for now it's not a factor.

Oh Boy What a dork!!! I always thought it was dang nab it! ( not that we say it here) If it means Wow! what about that song Dang me dang me they oughta take a rope and hang me???? It don't make sense to me..dang it! .. and Canada .. my dream to go there one day..I mean it..I have never travelled and have no desire to =except to Canada.. I have always though Canada is so beautifull and the Rockies WOW! Do you know I have NEVER even seen snow..I dream of experiencing snow one day.. I have friends that are visiting Canada at the moment and the emails are making me envious :)
Wow, that's amazing. Looks like it took much longer than that. I'm impressed. :)
actually the only thing I timed or logged the time was the cow door..there was 20 hours of work in that
Well I'm a Photoshop guy of some experience and there's lots more around here too so just let us know if you have any questions, and before you know it you'll be zooming along.
I doubt it but I hope so .. I only discovered scrapping a few months ago and somehow stumbled across digital scrapbooking and found SM... and have been hooked ever since
Since you already understand all that stuff like color values, contrast/tone, lighting, etc. it should be a breeze for you, i.e. it's just a matter of working out the semantics of your chosen software.
The trouble is I do NOT know what to look for .what "functions do I need in a program?

Always been a sustenance and covering and be content sort of girl ..I do not believe money can bring happiness.. I like the scripture that s says " Give me neither poverty nor riches"........It's nice to have enough but why do rich people turn to drugs or commit suicide if it's the be all and end all of happiness? Look at Whitney houston for example! She had money, fame, wonderful singing talent and incredible beauty but look at her now... I like the simple things ..and my friends.. ( not that my friends are simple oops! I didn't mean that LOL)

Afew months of my spare time mostly in the evening instead of TV..like my scrappin' now.. I'm not into TV much..rather do something or make something.
It is just acrylic paint ..(wall paint mostly)
and yes there is so much I am not good at..the list is too long to fit though,,
But one is Photo editing and making embellishments ect .. I am still a bit computer illiterate in many areas:(
Corey
05-29-2006, 05:18 AM
I agree. Poor Whitney. That can't be fun.
As for Canada, yep it's definitely beautiful here. You can see the Rockies from here. But it's double edged - Calgary is very beautiful and a great place to live but also the most expensive city in Canada currently. So it's a tough spot at the moment but definitely a really nice place.
As for the image editor it all comes down to what you need to do. If you just want to crop and resize then you don't really need any software. But if you want to adjust, etc. then you need something which offers the types of adjustments you're likely to do. Some people just need red-eye reduction whereas some people want full control over contrast and color.
The Grandpappy of all image editors is Photoshop, my main love. I've spent thousands of hours using Photoshop and I've loved every single one. You can do pretty much anything using Photoshop. For example at the extreme check out Bert Monroy's digital paintings, it's all 100% Photoshop:
http://www.photoshopsupport.com/inspiration/bert-monroy/hamburgers.jpg
http://www.bertmonroy.com/fineart/text/fineart_damen.htm
It really comes down to deciding where you are headed. You can easily start with something free and then evolve from there, that's what I recommend. There's quite a few good freebies out there nowadays:
http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/imageediting/tp/freephotoedw.htm
I'd say start with GIMP. It's 100% free, popular, and it's definitely sufficient to get your sea legs. Might even be all you need actually, it's a pretty decent package. Try some of the other free image editors too. Here's the GIMP installer for Windows, note that you will have to install the free "GTK library" seen there also because GIMP relies on it:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
There's also add-on packages for "help" and "animation" there. Also some freebies (like brushes and patterns) for GIMP here:
http://www.gimp.org/resources/
Here's a look at the workspace, very Photoshop-ish:
http://www.gimp.org/screenshots/windowsxp_screenshot1.png
http://www.gimp.org/screenshots/windowsxp_screenshot2.png
Anyhow give it a shot sometime. GIMP has a good help file and there's tons of resources on Google. :)
Moonbeam
05-29-2006, 05:30 AM
Thanks for that .. I haven't had time to look at all the links yet but I definately will...
I have a photo program ( Picasa) a free google one.. I know how to crop , remove red eye. and play around with all the other stuff on there.. but what I want now that I am into scrapping is to be able to do what Granny did with those pins - rub a piece out so it looks like it goes through the paper.. and to make embellishments with a TRANSPARENT background.. I want to make the great embellishments on SM look like they go through things..... Thats all
( For now) Nothing I have tried has that capability... I have downloaded some free ones and then deleted them because they don't do that... The freebies you placed on your post.. Can you tell me if any of them will let me turn a jpg image into a png with transparent background?
Corey
05-29-2006, 05:54 AM
Yeah, once you get into a program which uses "layers" it'll all become apparent. It's super easy to work with transparency ("alpha") once you get the hang of it and the creative potential is vast... :)

O Corey Corey Corey.. Id did it .I did it!! I'm so wrapt.. it was so easy... Thankyou I downloaded Gimp...and in 5 mins I worked out how to erase a piece of the image ... O am I going to have fun now Boy!

Hi Moonbeam, yes i'm another Aussie over here in Queensland, Brisbane, i just can't get over your murals they are just beautiful, would be such a shame to paint over them, you said you did do some for other people, were they happy with them & if so did your confidence not build with that, it's such a shame to with hold such a talent.
JoJo
Moonbeam
05-29-2006, 04:25 PM
Yes they were very happy - but probably with the price I charged them:rolleyes:
Another reason I didn't get "into" it is I already have a chosen "career" that I love ...I am involved as much as I can in A Bible Ministry work. It's entirely volunteer work so I just need secular work to support myself and I need a job with "set hours" so I can work my ministry around it.. And wating for art commisions would truly mess that up and I was scared that as I love painting so much It would gradually take over and push more important things aside. I know though that in the future when God's KIngodom takes over rulership of the earth.. All peoples will have eternity- all the time they need to fulfil their hearts desire and do all the wonderful things we just don't have time for now. In the mean time I use it when I can as recreation.
Thank you so much for your generous compliment.

I like to paint also, and acrylics, and I will paint wood, tin, saw blades, just about anything! But my favorite is to paint landscapes of water, mountains, cabins, deer, etc... Actually now I have finished up at the Pharmacy ( I left last Week) I am hoping to paint some more and use them as a basis for handpainted art templates for our new scrapbook store and to put in the new Scrapbook Max store ( something truly original).. so hopefully I'll get to find my brushes again soon.
and thank you all who made such great compliments.. I am awed and blown away that anyone even thinks they are good.. so thanks for the kind words folks

Hey! PK did you dig this old thread up? I guess this is the one I was looking for and couldn't find it? I had forgotten what I even posted....BUt anyway there are more photos of the lot here than I remember so you know what I wanted to show you now anyway. Funny because only this morning Ian said ( and he didn't even know I was talking about the paintings on here) "Don't you ever get sick of the painted walls, they've been there 7 years now , Do you want to paint over them?"
I do get sick of them and probably will paint them out but I would have to get someone else to do it.. I don't think I could do it - It took too long and I know I will never get time or inclination to do anything like that again _ I only did it just to see if I could.
These are truly "WORKS OF ART"..... Your home must be so COLOURFUL ~~ just like yourself...
AMAZING.....

Thanks Girls,
I was more interested in reading the posts and It was kinda funny for me to read through the posts after a year or so....because I was asking Corey who worked for SBM at the time how to make a .png file ( with a transparent background) I had only just started scrapbooking and had no idea how to do it. Gee! I have learned something in that year LOL

Well I would love to take all the credit for digging this up-but actually Sue posted in your thread the link, I went to it and decided to bring it back up--so Sue deserves the biggest thanks!!!! She's so good at finding old posts!:) Thank you Sue!!! But Moonbeam I still think your next vacation should be to Wisconsin. I will cook you a fantastic dinner if you stay a couple months and paint my house.:)

Wow! I'm a true newbie (just got scrapbook max in Oct) and I've so enjoyed looking around. But this wall mural is truly amazing. Thanks for reposting. I want to get in line for the mural painting and dinner. I'm not much of a cook but we can order in! Ha Ha! Maybe that should be my mural. ME actually cooking a gourmet meal in the kitchen!

OK!! It's been over 2 years since I psted this thread, and at last I am painting over the murals.... primarily because we took out the front wall . door and window so now it is entirely glass so we can see outside... so that wrecked part of the mural so I decided to paint the lot out and go to normal walls again ...
anyway I was talking to Moonlightpearl and mention I was pinting the living area and the old murals, and she wanted to see the murals so I am resurrecting this thread to show her my painting efforts...
when I am finished I will post the "NEW" lounge room which will be very ordinary but how I love my new view into the garden... nothing beats a glimspe of the outdoors and the view of natures beauty

Thanks Tracie,
I have just finished painting over all the murals pictured... I have been going to for a long time but couldn't bring myself to paint out the first bit.. It's just that it took so long and was hard work and i know I will never paint anything again ( I dont have time these days) BUT when we knocked out the front wall and put in a wall to wall window/slidngdoor it wrecked half t he mural so it was a case of have to.. and I quite enjoyed destroying it LOL
WE have redecorated but most of all I absolutely LOVE the view.. just being able to see outdoors is what I most wanted and I dont regret it.. I think its the best thing I have ever done to my home - looking out at creation in the garden is so very relaxing... this is my new view - I would rather look at creation anyday than anything i could paint

Wow, love your view out the doors! I love your fountain too. I wish I had a place to sit in the house and look out. I can stand at my kitchen window, but that isn't the same. I have a screened porch I sit on when it is nice out. But that doesn't help when the weather turns bad!
