Hi folks, I thought I would start something new here. I have an old family Cookbook that has old fashion remedies listed. I thought some of them are rather humerous and fun to read. This book is copy righted 1890, so I think I am pretty safe in posting them . I will start with two. I will post until I run out of the remedies and tips, or if you don't wish to see them, let me know.

this is great Sue..I love old things like this..when we had a cold my mother used to put vicks salve all over our chest and tie a flannel rag around our necks to cover it up..a warm pj top went over this..then put us right to bed because you couldnt stir around with this on you...sure was strong smelling and I can imagine that the pine and tar was too...

Hey Sue,

These are always great to read and can be so humerous although, I don't know how funny (or fun) some of these remedies were back in the 'dark days' of medical science.

Can anyone add old 'wives tales' here????

Thanks for the laugh - Terry.

You are right Terry, I should have added that but there is no where to edit. Some of the others may actually work, but I wouldn't try most of them!

For anyone reading this thread, These are meant for fun reading only, not to try!

:p Sue and the rest of you ladies, you are too funny. Actually, there was truth in many of the old remedies. Although I'm not sure about the ones posted, I bet the ones about making a person vomit were probably darn effective.

Chicken soup - in every culture, mothers gave it to the sick and now science has found out why it works.

My mom gave me paragoric (sp?) when I had pain. Ha, ha, now we find out it had opium in it. It worked too! And those old time remedies about using coca cola. Well, back in the day, Coke deliberately put cocaine in its coke because they knew it would cause people to become addicted to the Coke. And hence, sales and profits rose. So with all that cocaine in it, I would image it may have made some people feel "cured".

And the cod liver oil. My mother never gave me any...lucky me. However I take it now because its rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids which are bodies sorely need and is deficient in our diets. Back in the day, when our mothers gave it to us, manufacturers didn't put vitamin E in it to preserve it (keep it from oxidizing). That's why it tasted so bad! It was spoiled!

To funny Sue..thanks for posting these.. I thought when they said tie the flannel they were going to say somewhere else..like a diaper..lol
Verleen...I remember the paragoric ..you just bought the stuff over the counter..we gave it to babies for everything.. I took it for cramps..I think it was legal till sometimes in the 70's..it used to be in Baby Donagel..you could also buy quinnine pills
I used to take herbs a lot..they really work too..valerian root is the basis for Valium..I knew a man that sold herbs in a shop...John Hopkins used to get him to come there and teach them about herbs...I thank God for modern medicine but sometimes I think you can take too much..I have 15 prescriptions and some morns I get up feeling good and then I take them and I feel terrible but if I try not taking them.. in about a day I can tell it..so we are between a rock and a hard place..wow Im rambling today..sorry..:)

GRANDMA'S CURES

Did You Know that Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache
pain almost immediately -- without the unpleasant side effects caused by
traditional "pain relievers."

Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for
burns.

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with
mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong
Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.

Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in
1cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as
a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.

Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take
1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two
tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms.
Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost
instantly-- even though the product was never been advertised for this
use.

Honey remedy for skin blemishes... Cover the blemish with a dab of
honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the
skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

Listerine therapy for toenail fungus. Get rid of unsightly toenail
fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful
antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from
loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to
the threads of the screws before tightening them.

Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer... If menacing bees, wasps,
hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the
insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground
instantly.

Smart splinter remover...just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the
splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter
sticks to the dried glue.

Hunt's tomato paste boil cure...cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste
as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the
boil to a head.

Balm for broken blisters...To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few
drops of Listerine... a powerful antiseptic.

Vinegar to heal bruises... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar
and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the
blueness and speeds up the healing process.

Kills fleas instantly. Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a
few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse
well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas.

Rainy day cure for dog odor... Next time your dog comes in from the
rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet,
instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Eliminate ear mites... All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil
in your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat
daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites,
and accelerates healing.

Quaker Oats for fast pain relief....It's not for breakfast anymore! Mix
2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the
microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your
hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

Dog Personalities

How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?

1. Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?
2. Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.
3. Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!
4. Rottweiler: Make me.
5. Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.
6. Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!
7. German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.
8. Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture. (how true)!
9. Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb!
10. Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
11. Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Or "We don't need no stinking light bulb."
12. Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?
13. Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...
14. Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

How many cats does it take to change a light bulb?

Cats do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is:
"How long till my dinner is ready"
