I went camping this week and came upon this. I think it is a moth....can anyone identify it????

Hay, this is fun. We could have a contest...lol......well my opinion is that this is what they call a "buttermoth". They are very rare and are both male and female. There for, they self breed.....and more important .......if you believe my story I have some land for sale....lol........All kidding aside it is very, very beautiful and if you can make an embellishment of it I hope you will share it with us............Thanks for such a great picture..........Lois.....xo..Smile

It's a bird... it's a plane... it's.... Super Buttermoth!!!!
It's a thingy with beautiful colors and antenas, flys around checking out the neigborhood, and drinks root bear all day long. It's been known to frequent the water hole, and loves Knzus dead plants nurseries.

UGHHHHHHHHHH!! I HATE MOTHSSS!!!!! For the past two years we have had them in our ceiling!! They literally fly out of the light bulbs, we had to bomb the house 4 times already! If they come back this year I AM MOVING!!! LOL
*packing me bags and movin' to Arizona where the sunsets are beautiful!*
I am learning to use GIMP so I cut the moth out of my picture.....If anyone wants it......here it is.....I don't usually think of moths as pretty, but this one struck my eye....

and not all moths eat your clothes............i think i can make a good guess that this one doesnt :D ( and then again its not the butterfly that eats your nice blouse, or my homeknit sweater  :D but its larvea)
and in fact it is a butterfly as such lol.
in dutch we separate them with 'day' butterfly and 'night' butterfly.
but this doesnt mean that the night ones only fly at night or even that the day ones only fly during the day.
the antenea ( how do you spell this!!??) are a good clue.
the (day) butterfly ones always end in a little .....well wat would i call it... little round ball kinda . kinda like a pin
and night-butterflies ones never do. and with this one with such beautifull feather like antenea........
absolutly beautifull
thanx for the picture and the gimp image!
wish we had some of those flying around here.........

I think it's an unusual moth-almost has enough color for butterfly-I said almost- "lickle", I too learned something new, never heard that before.
What exactly is gimp??

OK, class. Put down the scrap papers and the embie and sit down in your seats for biology class.
As Professor twx already stated the speciman in a Polyphemus moth, the most common giant silk moth named after the one-eyed giant, Polyphemus of Greek mythology because of the large eyespots on its hindwings. In the South, it has two broods. The accordion-shaped larva feeds on a variety of trees and shrubs, especially oak, hickory, elm, maple, and birch.
Now be prepared for a test when next we meet! Be sure to know the classification (Lepidoptera) and the scientific name (antheraea polyphemus).
Class dismissed.
:D The teacher in me couldn't resist the challenge.:D

Julie, glad to know that you, Eng and myself have an exclusive club of our own.......lol
I've been real busy since getting home last week. My hard drive at work crashed last Monday. Then on Wednesday I interviewed for my OLD job with the School District. I understand that there were 8 nurses apply and they have selected but no one knows yet. I heard that the person selected is Experienced so....... Maybe I got it. I sure hope so! :)
This morning I got up and discovered I had a leak from the upstairs Master Bath that damaged my ceiling. I put a call into American Home Shields for a plumber but never got one today. UGH..... I turned off the water valve upstairs. I also put in a claim for my ceiling damage with my home owners (online).
All in all, I'm doing great...... :D
I've been reading all the posts and we really have a lot of our SBM family who are ill and grieving. Makes my problems seems so small. I am praying for a speeding recovery for everyone and peace and strength with the losses.
Luv You All

You can download the Gimp and it's free, not just a trial. It does most things the expensive programs do.
Download at:http://www.gimp.org/windows/
TUTORIAL FOR MAKING PNG TRANSPARENCIES USING GIMP
1.Open your clipart in the Gimp program
2.Go to layer & click on transparency, click to the right for menu
3.Click on add alpha channel
4.Go to tools-selection tools-fuzzy select
5.Click on your white background
6.Go to edit & click on cut
7.Go to file-save as. Name your document. Choose folder you want to save in.
8.Click on select file type-click on png- click on save.
9.In the box that comes up, place a checkmark beside:
save background color; save resolution; save color values.
10.Hit ok
This sounds like a lot of steps, but it's really fast & easy to do.
Doing this will get rid of the dreaded "white box".
There are lots of different tutorials posted on the net. I will try to look up a few links.....

This forum is soooo cool. I just laugh all the time! The humor is awesome. You guys crack me up. It's like being back in school and you have your teachers and your joksters and everyone just fits together like a good fitting glove. Thanks for adding some humor and fun and laughter to my life! I get up and first thing in the morning I get on here to start my day off with a laugh, and it's the last thing I do at night for a humor filled night of dreams. Boy, do you think I need to get a life or what???? Love you guys!!
We call them moon moths in canada. They do come out at night and are really big.
