Hi All! This month's kit (courtesy of Steve (http://www.scrapbookmax.com/store/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=2)) is in the post just below this one!
THIS MONTH WE'LL BE DOING 2 SIZES: 8 by 8 and 4 by 6
Please specify when uploading for us which size you are doing! By the time the nmonth is over, we'll have an 8 by 8 album AND a mini bragbook!
Each month I will upload a full kit and a colorswatch from one of the designers (or an aspiring designer who would like to donate something.)
You are to do the following things with that kit:
1. Make a layout and upload it to the gallery and post a link here for us to see
2. Make a template and share it with the group (post to this thread!)
3. Make coordinating embellishments and papers, etc to share with the group (on this thread)
I am attaching my template and the colorswatch to get y'all started. See post below for full kit!
Have Fun!
Julie

By the way - Steve's kit will be much easier to work with when it comes to uploading stuff because the file sizes are much smaller than my mammoth kit was last month!! :p

These are great colors! My oldest daughter is expecting in July and these colors are perfect.
Just a reminder to everyone when naming your templates to include your name or something unique, because otherwise your template may overwrite someone else's.
Thanks,

If everyone would use the same thing but place there screen name in it they would all fall in the same place in the templates folder. For example use the following when naming:
Feb_Challenge_8X8_screenname.smt or
Feb_Challenge_4X6_screenname.smt
Mine would be Feb_Challenge_8X8_spanielmom.smt
How does that sound?

tried re-saving them but the all three (bubbles, puzzle, stripes) come in blurry as backgrounds, and if I bring them in as paperscraps the design is tiny and multiplied by many times. So what you see as big bubbles are teeny tiny bubbles all over the paper

Thank you so for these links. I still can not open the FEB CHALLENGE file with all the goodies, for this challenge! Thank you Thank you Thank you, for your zip files because I'm able to extract them and open them. I have no idea WHY the file link is saving or opening as a SBM file, which I can not figure out how to open. Everytime I click on it, it tells me that there are 49 files but I'll be dang to figure out WHERE THERE GOING OR HOW TO OPEN THEM. I'm sure when I figure this out, the file will have at least 300-400 files in it, rather than the 49. I have literally tried everything I can think of to include saving them to my embellishments, and again they saved as a SBM file, which I can not open. What is the recommended program to use and where do I find it?i??
I would love to do this challenge so if anyone can please explain in detail as to why I can not change, save or use this to a jpeg file, I would appreciate it. Heck, I don't care what the heck file it's in, as long as I can use it!

I got excited about the color swatch again.
(This looks a lot better enlarged. Something about the font peeking on the side makes the plaid look "off axis" on the thumbnail, but it isn't...I worked really hard to line those boxes back up nice and straight, Julie. [ahem...not that they were CROOKED or anything!) :-D
(Lovin' the enthusiasm and all the fun work going on!)

Onie,
Try opening SBM, open a blank doc. Click on the little embellishment red heart at the top, and scroll down the list.
Mine is called "Booster Pack". Every paper and element is shown there in the main viewer panel when you click on Booster Pack--creative name! ;)

WOW, You guys have really been busy while I was sleeping! I got up and found all sorts of neat things to play with. I love all the templates and the embies you've all made and shared. This is going to be a fantastic challenge! Thanks Steve & Julie for the kit and the challenge! Thanks to everyone else for their contributions!
Love the naming suggestion...will make it easier to find. I also love the embies in the zip files.....much easier to work with. I put a folder on my desktop and called it Feb Challenge SBM. Then I open the zip file and move all of the embies into that one folder. That means it's all there in one place to work with when I scrap and I can drag & drop.

A great idea Linda. I'm a bit confused though as to the zip files you mean. Do you mean Julie's or the ones Sue's posted? Have yo changed them to zip files? If you have how do you do it, I would much prefer them to be saved elsewhere and use the browse.
Maybe I've totally misunderstood.:D:confused:

Looks like it get installed to:
"C:/Scrapbook MAX!/Gallery/Images/Embellishments/Booster Packs"
Julie added a couple of items and changed the install location...
From previous gifts, I have multiple items in that folder. Tried searching by modify date to find the ones for this challenge and could not make sure that I have all the right ones.
Can it be posted again, perhaps in a .sbm file with a specific name or a zip file?
Thanks,

I'm totally stumped as to what is happening with the papers of mine you downloaded..So redid them for you to try these..SAVE TARGET AS and drop in Paper scraps..You might have a gremlin in your program. Does it distort the Baby Announcement?? if you downloaded that??

You're doing great with the papers Wonder; thanks!
Steve, Thank you soooo much for the zip file. That makes things much easier! :)
Eve, I mean the zip files like Steve's above and like the ones that put the embies in a zip for us to use. It's just so much nicer, easier and faster to have the zip files and open them into one folder on the desktop. Then you don't have to hunt for challenge items. If they have .zip on the end, you unzip them and put each individual element in the main folder. This is probably clear as mud! I have a hard time explaining things sometimes.
Maybe someone else can explain it better.

Well I'm still having the same troubles. Thanks Wonder for reposting your original papers. I deleted the old ones and saved the new ones. No luck. I've tried bringing them in as everything available and I get the same results no matter what I do. Thanks Steve, That's much easier than going through the entire booster pack file to find which ones are part of this challenge. I think a lot of times we are in such a hurry to get things done, we forget one little piece like naming conventions for easier handling. Oh well.

I'm excited to post some embies I made. I hope you will like them! It took quite awhile and 3 programs to do them. It's my first attempt and probably did it the hard way! If only we could make embies in SBM and save them separately! I made them there but couldn't save anyway except a template. I could post the template of them, but then you'd have to put everything back in place if you resize them. These will install under embellishments in the F's.

I'll put my template up when im done decorating it! lol... but here are these if you all want them...

Hey all... i wanted to do something kinda new for the 4x6 part of this challenge... so i made some framed layouts.. (i guess thats what you call them) One of them was a bit challengeing with the pictures i had, but it worked out great! I'll put my template up when im done decorating it! lol... but here are these if you all want them...
I saved them in a new folder named 4x6 under shapes in the gallery, made it extra easy to apply them when i pulled in a paper scrap.
Love these, LOVE these, LOVE these!! You don't have to use them just for 4x6...they skew so nicely when you UNCHECK the KEEP ASPECT off under EDIT!!
AWESOME JOB ON THESE!!! THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING!!
Maggie

Angie: I'm excited about the 4X6 layouts, too! Great thinking Angie.
Linda: I'm just excited you figured out how to package them and get them to instal in a embie file...way to go!
Wonder: You're wonderful. What else can we say? :)

Here is the cover book and the grommet with out the ribbon and bows if some one wants them separate. You could probably re-size it in SBM and take out the grommet holes if you wanted to.

WOW all of the layouts are great and the new papers and emblishments are wonderful..I hate to post mine now but here goes
http://www.scrapbookmax.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=1463
These are just some borders and solid bg papers also made an alpha set..the alphas are in a png format..I dragged them into SBM and then used the crop feature to cut each one out. . they resize nicely

well I've tried and tried and tried to post my template but I cant even get the window to pop up anyone have any suggestions..
Maggie
02-03-2007, 08:23 PM
I'm not sure what window you mean, but I've had trouble in the past when I forgot to check both "remove pictures" and "optimize embellishments".
I think the wording should be more clear in the program. "Optimize" to me implies making the file LARGER (highly quality=optimize)...here, I think it makes the file smaller.
If you aren't sure if you checked those two, you can go back and go through the process, making sure you do it, and letting it write over the previous file.
Blessings,
Maggie

Don't feel bad - I just tried and it was too big! I'm not sure how to make it smaller so I have to give up on this one I think. I just put it in the gallery and it doesn't have many embies so I don't know why it's so big?! Here it is:

Here is my contribution so far to the embies.
Hi Julie
I am not clever in the making of templates or embies department, so am I permitted to just add a layout to the gallery, using the Feb challenge- without contributing to the other sections of the challenge???? I am sorry I am very naive in creating stuff for others.
thanks in advance
Karyn.:)
Just reread the challenge, I gather I can make a L/O using the Feb kit for others, that doesnt seem so scary, but still cannot make my own embies, sorry about that :)
Karyn.

thanx :D thats my girl when she was just litlle over a year old. (she s 4 now and boy do i ever know it!!) :D
absolutly dont get the embies as embies bit
i work in microsoft photo premium and save the file as png or jpg, this makes it a flat file. I can save as a workable png but this leaves the file huge!! way to big for uploading.
i did notice though that it might be a problem with jpg saving on my puter.
it save all jpg as Corel photopaint jpg.
hmm???
but i did get my other pages in Kalina's folder uploaded. so will try again.
i am just a bit worried about making the file to small, thus it wont be really usefull for others to work with.
but i will give it a try and then people will just have to try and let me know if it comes out ok.
thanx

its got to be JPG
it says max KB is 2048
my file is smaller then that but still wont upload
now what is the max size mine is now 1280 x 1280 pix
already sized it down but still wont upload
now how small must these pixel dimensions go
and then i left the resolution to 300 pix per inch
is less better?? or is this ok?

Are you guys also clicking the "maximize embellishments" box? That makes it smaller also I've read on here somewhere.
(Wouldn't it be great to somehow have permanent linkies to official instructions for uploading templates and .jpgs that would show no matter where you are on the site?

Thanks, Maggie. I have been clicking the "maximize emb." but someone said to be sure to bring everything in as paper scraps and embie. I've been bringing things in as pictures and that may be the problem. The next one I'll try everything I can think of! At least two of them worked!! :p

I think they were speaking of other things that may need resizing.
In the case of a template, using File|Export Template (deselecting pics and selecting maximize embellishments works best I imagine.

Maggie Mae, I'm the one who was talking about the paper scraps and embies. When you go to add them to your page and the little box pops up asking how you want to use them the photo is selected by defaut. Be sure and change this at this point to either paper scrap or embie. If you don't it makes it larger and worse than that....when you go to export it and remove the photos, guess what gets removed along with your pictures? Yep, you have a template with a lot of missing parts.
I do wish Max could fix it so that you use effects on both embies and paper scraps. On the embies you can change color, but can't change shape in any way. On the paper scraps, you can change the shape but not the color or any effects. That gets frustrating and I thing that's why so many bring them in as photos.
Everyone is making wonderful layouts! My, my the talent that lies within this group is amazing! I'm lovin every minute of it. Like Wonder said, it's really exciting! :)
I'm hoping someone will make more papers that knows how to do it. I love the ones we have, but would like more of a selection including some solid color ones. Wonder's bubble paper is awesome! How about making more Wonder and Crops and anyone else with the know-how.

Linda - I'm not sure what box you're talking about - I always go to the heart or paper scrap. I never see a box that lets me choose how to use the picture! Something to learn I think! I do agree - I mostly import as pictures so I can adjust them - wish we could with scraps!

You get that nice box when you drag and drop your embies onto your page. Just open the folder where your embies are. Select the one you want and drag it to the page. The box instantly comes up with your embie and asks what you want to do with it. Once you try it this way, you won't want to do it the other way.... much faster and more versatile.
You can do the same thing with pictures. Let me know how you do with this please. I sure hope it helps!

Wow. I hadn't considered the problem Linda mentioned of bringing in papers and embies by drag and drop, or as "pictures".
When we export templates and get rid of the "pictures", the templates are blank! Arg!!
I'm not sure how else to import .jpgs into this system. Even the paper scrap folder doesn't seem to like my .jpgs.
I guess we have to save them as a .png or a .psd (photoshop) file?

I like grungy looking papers and noticed there weren't many here. (Sort of along the "Basic Grey" line of design, for those of you who keep up with paper and glue scrapping.)
So, here's one. I designed the stamp to make the paper, then used non-copywrited brushes to sand it...all mine. And yours! Enjoy.

I've never worked this way (I do everything the hard way!!). Do you have scrapbook max minimized to drag and drop? When I work on a scrapbook page it covers the whole screen so I get things by clicking on pictures or the heart, etc. Hoping to learn how to do this!!

Use "restore down" instead of minimize, that way it just makes your window smaller and you can see both pages or programs or folders or whatever you want to see.

Marion, I'm not familiar with restore down. Is there a place to click on to do that or what? I ususally just use the side arrows to make my window smaller to get 2 on the page at the same time. Then click on the one I want to make it active. Is this what you mean or is there another way?
All the new layouts are great! These are such fun colors!

These are great. Are you going to upload them to your gallery? Looked and did not see them. Would have made a comment on the 16 year old lo, that is really great. How long did it take you to add all the bubbles, circles etc.?
Sorry---I worked on these so long that I didn't take the time to upload them there also. I'll do that plus I hope to upload some of the embies I made on the baby page. Might take me a few days though cause my kids keep getting 2-hour delays because of the cold temps here in PA. When they are home I don't get any scrapping done. Then it throws my whole day off.

What a beautiful tribute and happy that it has helped to face this loss. Our tears are also tears of joy since scrapbooking has helped you. This will also probably be a treasure for his big brother.
Just keep thinking that he is with God and is your very special angel watching over you.

for those that are making more things such as papers for the challenges, May I suggest when you save them save them bigger than 100x100 when you bring them into sbm and stretch them out I have noticed they start to fade taking away from the beautiful work you have put into creating them. I have tried to resize the ones I have but unfortunately it made them really crappy looking and I am abite dissappointed the resizing has distorted them. They are beautiful and I can't use them with it happening. Please don't take this the wrong way. Not my intentions. Everyone is doing a Beautiful job. Keep it up.
Question are you guys putting them into your background folder in SBM? To use them and keep everything the way it should be.?

Sorry NanaC its probably me your talking about, I noticed that it was doing that yesterday, and I went back to try to make some bigger, but then it was tooo big I am still learning at this so please try to bear with me, I have found that if I bring it in as a picture and then crop it, it comes out ok, But I just need some more time to figure all this stuff out! So I thank you for your advice and just be a little patient with me and I will get it sooner or later.

Angelwithin- that is such a perfect name for you! I have to say that I too shed a few tears, it makes me want to go hug my children, and thank God for them, I can never say I know what you went through or how you must feel today, as I have never lost a child, but you my friend have a very strong heart to take all this pain, Please know that all your friends here at SBM always pray for those who need it the most and at this difficult time our prayers are with you! The tribute Layouts are sooo fantastic, I must repeat what everyone else is saying, because it is so true, This must of been soooo hard to do, and I thank you for sharing part of a difficult time for you! We got to know you a little better. And feel for your sorrow. Thanks again for letting us see a special time in your life.

There are are couple more. But it is just a suggestion. I have tried different things and they are not looking right. I just think its a terrible waste. You all spend time creating them yet they are disorted when used. Bummed. I love them and they turn out crappy. I am bearing with evryone, but thought I might suggest making them a little bigger than 100X100. Please dont take offense.(Not meant to be offensive). the works are wonderful from everyone.

nanna---I had some problems with some of the papers and found out that I wasn't saving them correctly. When you see a paper in the thread, you must first click on the paper. When it open up---you then right click and save to what ever folder you want. I used to just right click on the picture in the thread and these were all distorted for me. I struggled with this for a few nights before Dr. Marion figured out the problem for me (well actually for someone else and I happened to read the thread).
I went back and resaved them the corrert way and they are all ok. I had tried the resizing thing too to no avail.

I'm having problems with opening these files of Jazz's, Sorry Sue it wasn't yours! These Alphas and a few more things are not opening for me. They are not going into the Booster files. I am getting a message, each time I try to open these that says something about the formate can not be recognized. They are a bitmap file. Am I missing something in my software, and not able to open these???? The cute teddy bears and butterflies can not be open either. I have about 8 or 9 files that keeps given me the messages!

Okay, here are the papers I've been scribbling.
(Still no layout from me...I'm having too much fun "coloring"!)
I thought I'd put them all here so you could pick the ones you have and leave the ones you don't. They were getting lost and spread out. Hope this helps. You may need a "Maggie" file of papers somewhere!
I just realized you guys need some solids to go with these. I'll try to add those before my half out "edit" window runs out...somebody time me. On my mark, get set...GO!
I'm working on stitches next!
Anyone making tags yet? :)
Maggie
02-06-2007, 08:24 PM
Okay, it won't let me put all these on one post. I'll just hog this whole entire page, K? Okay. Good. As long as we're all good with that.
A lot of people (including me) were asking for some solids. I've been wanting even a "white" block for matting and such. So...yes, I uploaded a white file in here somewhere coming up.
Maggie
02-06-2007, 08:31 PM
Very simple here.
I like color blocks, though, and you need solid papers to do that.
The paper here is an example of "color blocking".
Enjoy!
Maggie
02-06-2007, 08:35 PM
Okay, so I wanted a "khaki/taupe" that actually matched the one in the set! I tried to match it by memory, and when I saw it next to the color block page, I realized my memory is not as realiable as I'd hoped. Color dropper to the rescue!
Okay, I've hogged this page. Who's next? (Tags...anyone?)

I think I will stay away from posting paper. Haven't got the hang of using the booster pack yet. Maybe someone can use this medallion that I made. I also removed the paper clip from the squares for someone to use.
Could anyone make me a lt. blue snowflake outline? I think I will go with a snow theme.

Hi Karey, I am not very good at explaining, but you do need a program to do it in. Like Paint Shop Pro, Photo Shop Elembents etc.. If you do not have one like that you can download Gimp for free. Others use that and are able to make things.

Shapes used were the arrow and oval from SBM, the HeartAlpha Shapes from me in a previous thread, and the flower is from Autisticwonders' d27 20slantpedalfl shape.
It will install in your embellishments in a folder named the same as the .smb file.

I used paint shop pro for my backgrounds. I just made a new project 1600x1600 pixels... then opened up the color swatch. I used the color picker to match the colors i wanted, and then i just used some effects to create different looks. You just have to play with it!

Not too sure since I am not at my home computer. However, AutisticWonder has made so many shapes, there are probably button ones from her. Know I do have some at home.

Everything everyone has made is wonderful. Wish I had the programs to make such beautiful things. We need to remember though what Julie wants from us. She wants and 8X8 and a 4X6 layout. I've seen lots of 8X8's but only one 4X6. I'm just as guilty----I'm going to start working on the 4X6 now.

Love the 3rd page Onie. We certainly are a talented crew. For anyone who is interested-----there is a new version of SBM. Desmond left me know today. It is 1.0.6.1 If you go under the help on SBM there is a selection that says check for updates. This fixed some problems I was having importing pages. My SBM seems to run faster now----and I mean faster than 1.0.6.0 which just came out the other week. So its really fast now.
