HERE'S YOUR CHALLENGE:
(CHALLENGE KIT HAS BEEN REMOVED)
You are to make not only a layout, but a template to share with the group!
By the end of the month - You will have an entire matching album with all the templates that will be shared here! (SHARE IN THIS THREAD PLEASE!!!)
It's a fairly nice sized kit BUT here's an even more fun part of the challenge - If you are a designer or even if you are just starting to learn a program such as photoshop. photoshop elements, or PSP, use the elements in the kit as inspitarion to create MATCHING elements for this kit.
It can be a paper, some word art, or an embellishment. When creating things for this challenge, you MUST stick to the color scheme of this kit so it will match! (Here's a color swatch (http://www.lamazenashville.com/TEMPLATES/jankit/papers/swatch.jpg) to help aid in this.)
I think this will be fun!
So remember:
1) Post a layout to the gallery using this kit
2) Share your template with this group by posting to this thread
3) If you'd like, make additional coordinating pieces to go with this kit and share with the group by posting to this thread so others can use it in their layouts! (This part is optional of course but I think this is the really fun part!!! Push yourself to learn something new!)
At the end of the month, you'll have a lovely set of matching templates designed by various scrappers!!!!

This sounds like LOADS of fun! I can't wait to get started AND to see what you talented designers come up with to add to the kit. Speaking of the kit, is there supposed to be a link somewhere????
Also wondering if we should be doing a layout in any particular size....I know some people do 8 x 8, some 12 x 12 and some 8.5 x 11.
THANKS!!!

the file sizes are really big, it's taking foreverb to upload - i have to reduce the sizes abd break it up.
later! i promise!
and i do everything 8 by 8 - it's pretty easily converted to 12 by 12 abd eveb 8.5 by 11
so let's say 8 by 8!!!!! thanks for bringing that up!:p

The templets from the gifts. I tried to go back and copy to the desktop like you suggested, but couldn't reopen the link for some reason it came up with an error message. But thats ok, I have all the elements so I can still do the challenge. Thanks anyway!

OK - I am about to head out for a bit but I packed up the embellies here.
please let me know if they work before I redo all the other folders!
thanks and sorry! I think once we get going this should be a lot of fun! Sorry for the headaches, y'all!!! (I was so excited about giving this kit away! I hate that it's becoming such a pain!!!)
BY THE WAY! You may need to change the extension from .zip to .smb

Here is my try at this. Hope Idid it right.
Well, I checked remove picture but it is still there?
I converted Julies Photoshape frame into a puzzle frame and altered the color.
I used the Pink dots paper to make some embies. I used lots of effects, I couldn't name them all now, to alter the dot image on the paper in order to make the cat, the ball and yarn stran.
I used Autisticwonders Bow shape and Corner shape. On the corner shape I again used the Pink dots paper with some effects and altered the color to blend.
I used the Pink Dots paper again on the Lettering. I downloaded the Caribbean Font from "Dafont" which was a free font.
Then I used the circle shaper on the brown paper.
I think that is all my alterations.
I hope this works!

Thanks Julie! I used your original 4 links for all of the elements and papers of the kit and the links worked perfectly.
Guys - these are not SBM formatted elements, you get these just like if you purchased and downloaded a kit from a store (not SBM). You have to unzip them and organize them on your own.
Good luck everyone! I can't wait to play with all this stuff!!!!

Here is mine. It was a bit hard working with all the pinks and girly colors. But I think I was able to make it kind of boyish after all.
I changed the background to give it a stained glass look and I altered the star color to match the layout.

I found the way to get the template smaller is to delete the extra pages first, then save it as a new file with new name and then when finished, export as a new template.

Does everyone know that if you download a template with SBM you can not have anything grouped together because it does not put them on the template. The templates posted here (except for my own) have not been usable. Hope I don't hurt anyones feelings I just thought the idea was so everyone would end up with usable templates.
sacannon
01-04-2007, 12:50 PM
Did you look in the creations area of SBM under "Page" and click on "add page"? That is where they are suppose to show up.
spanielmom
01-04-2007, 01:00 PM
They show up----its just when you add the page to an album---anything that was grouped when exported to a template shows up with big blank spaces.
Marion
01-04-2007, 01:25 PM
Ok I figured out the problem I think. It is not the grouping, but when exporting the template make sure to remove the checkmark from the "remove photos" Many of the embies and backgrounds are added as a photo in order to be able to manipulate the items better. So when we leave that checked, it takes of everything.
I had a very hard time reducing the size of the template on this one.
I am re-uploading my template. Please let me know if it works!

One more thing, don't everyone name their layout "January Challenge" because when you install it, you will override someone elses. Add your name or number to it, or gave it a new name.
Just thougth I would throw that in as a suggestion.

Noticed that this challenge has stirred up a lot of excitement. That's good, looks like we will have a lot of goodies when it is over. Still thinking on mine.
Question. I thought that we could only use the things that you supplied plus anything else we make ourselves. Noticed that people are already sharing their goodies - can these be used now for this challenge?
Also noticed that templates are being named 'January Challenge' - concerned that if everyone names them the same, we will have overwrites when downloaded. Suggesting that each of us have our templates named perhaps with our login names as the beginning part.

Onie, you may have to split the template into separate templates. That is what I am having to do. The also if on the template, were the picture is, right click and there is a option that says "clear image" it leaves a gray place marker where the picture used to be. Save your template after that and that saves a lot of space. I am uploading page 2 where you can see a example of that.
Here is also a link of the layout with the pictures.

Amazing all the different templates that can be made with just a handful of embellishments and papers! I may have to make another page just for fun!
There is no limit in this challenge on how many templates we can create I think. So we could come up with a whole mess of them.
Maybe for next months challenge, blues??????

I hope this works as I had to load 2 different templates as I didn't know how to make size smaller.
The one template is the background. It is the pink paper with leaves with a swirl effect added.
The 2nd I took the ribbon & changed color. I also used the ribbon for the background of the words & some of the Pics. All I did was change size & custom shape. I changed the word "Cute" several times. The new words are made from font: Algerian.. I also took the torn paper element & changed the color to pink & added a gridded custom shape.
I love these pics of my Granddaughter....TLT

Okay, here is another attempt to upload this template. I went into the folders and moved all the January Challenge items into the SM embellishments and paper scraps folders. Then I recreated the page (from scratch) and exported. It made a huge difference. Beforehand, the template size was 7.46M. It was counting each embellishment and paper scrap as an individual picture!
Here it is, let me know if it won't download.
This is my first attempt to post a template. So this challenge has pushed me a little. I just used the elements from the posted kit. Maybe by the end of the month I can manage to craft some item of my own.....

Eng it is a software program I got when Scrapbook Answers Magazine was in exisistence, I have played around with it and can do alot of different changes in it. kinda like the advance section in SBM, with just different stuff.

you can use the hue saturation lightness in advanced features to change the color! no need to take it to another program!

I've tried to use these features but you can't see the changes until you apply - many times the changes seem drastic. Does anyone else have this problem?!

I do it all the time just to tweak photos a bit and change colors of papers a tad bit. You just tick them up a teeny bit and it makes a difference - if you slide it it will totally change the hue.
and if you click apply and you don;t like it you can always click undo!

Carol, it says that we have to stay within the color swatches. I am sticking as close as possible to the orange colors Julie gave us to play with. I have done some of the changes with either Microsoft picture it or paint shop pro.
I think it still matches what Julie gave us, I just rarely use pink or mauve because of my male oriented family. I didn't think I would like this challenge because of the color scheme, but I am being challenged by it. Hope you like my templates.

I had the same problem with the size of my layout. I was given some excellent advice. Start off by removing your pic by right clicking to remove the image. Then shrink from 8 x 8 to smaller. I also had to make some of my embies smaller and remove a few things. Basically the layout is the same but I did have to make changes! I had used the "torn paper" and put 4 of them together in the middle of my layout then the pic on top. I had to finally remove the 4 torn papers and added the one page with the pink scallop around the pic. That really decreased the size.
Good luck, hope I gave you some help because I got really frustrated with trying to shrink the size. Finally got it, thanks to Sue's help!

All my grandchildren are boys, so I changed the pink to the brown in the zigzag papers and the button. Then I made some photocorners. They are in the template.
I posted the layout in the gallery.
I have never tried to attach anything before, so we will see what happens.

Created 3 new papers using this batch of papers and made them much easier to work with. Also included 1 shape.
Can someone tell me how to make a thumbnail?? I thought the folder thumbnail for each would do the trick..Got REJECT notice on import..wrong type. Has to by 100x100 size..Just too lazy to go back to that work screen AGAIN!! Heaven knows I've done it enough times today.
1) Brown background with 25% opac. for orange layer with spruce texture added
2) Brown angle strip across left side of page...Reminded me of Hershey's Chocolate..maybe I needed a chocolate break..
3) Straight stripes with moz ancht. effect added for quilted look. Great for wacky letters.
4) shape inspired by a card I picked up at a thrift store today.
Sorry, no thumbnails. I feel for the size problems. You guys are great at layouts so let me play with making up some weird papers to compliment your efforts.

The thumbnail is created automatically when you export your template. It is called a screenshot.
You can also go to the published folder and upload your jpg, you may have to resize it though.

But Doc..I'm talking about making the Papers..I didn't make templates. Is that the only way to get the right thumbnail is to bring the papers into SBM and make a template out of just a piece of paper?? The way you mentioned is the only way I know..Isn't there another way...besides the hard working way of redoing with smaller size..Goosh, don't we have a button or something we can wave a magic wand and it creates a thumbnail..hastle free?? Or am I just dreaming of a better day???

Julie wants us to stick to the color scheme for us to have lots for album pages to coordinate together..But, with the additional challenge of making as many embellishments, etc to go with it..Hey, we'll take anything!! And like Julie also mentioned..we can use hue and staturation to change the colors..Dah, I forgot about that..

Well, may have to go back to Marion's suggestion to make thumbnails you have to do the template thing in SBM for the screenshot..I made these tiny thumbnail size in jpg form. Hopefully, this will come through so you can see the papers I made up..Eeek..What a challenge..But I am learning as we all struggle with this adventure. The booster pack for these is a few pages back.
If this doesn't show as thumbnails, I'm going to go back to working the problem until I get it!! Doctor Marion "knows"..No easy way to do this!!

Minimize your scrapbook max program, so you can still see it. I started with a blank template, I opened the folder containing the January items and minimized it and then one at a time dragged the the items onto the page I was working on. I did resize several items in paintshop pro. It took a lot of trial and error, but after the first page, the rest went a lot faster.

Had some fun thinking of a BUSY page to represent Jean's BUSY life but very fulfilled life. How we think of her is often different from how she looks at herself. I think all 3 of us perceive her pretty well!! Today, I worked on trying to send a message with pictures, embellishments, words, and paper choices..So much to coordinate.. So much to learn...but having fun!!
They SHAPE for halfpage is enclosed because we didn't have one in SBM. The black and white PNG is to go to your SHAPES folder for you newbies out there.
LOVING everyone's GORGEOUS papers, embellishments and templates!! It tickles me how excited we all are!! Thanks to Angelwithins' added embellishment of cute flowers.
To download the black and white image simply right click>SAVE TARGET AS> SAVE it to SCRAPBOOK MAX>GALLERY>IMAGES>SHAPES...basic shapes is where I would put it.

Carol, it came through with one exception. You must have left the box checked that says remove pictures. Go back Delete it out of your templets, re-submit it, but uncheck the box. Then you should have it.

I sized everything down to workable sizes 1200x1200 mostly. My templates were not more than 1 MB when finished!! Hope this will help the ones struggling with size.
Here's a few extra SHAPES to play with to help give a little comfort to you. For newbie: Just right click the black and white pictures..Click "SAVE TARGET AS" and send to your SHAPES folder in SBM under Save. Don't OPEN..

After several retries, I had to do the same thing. I started with a blank page and imported each item individually and the it was small enough.
Marion
When I did it I just imported the entire template without changing anything and it resized down to a manageable one.

First time learning how to make BUTTONS today! So used the papers in this challenge to make BUTTONs with. The ziggy paper has swirl button in bundle but I forgot to put with picture for you to see and it's probably the cutest of the bunch..Hope you love little surprises. I made sure to use Angelwithin's advise for making the buttons without white backing. THey tested all to have the transparent sides. Have fun!! Some of the button don't have holes so you can use for putting letters in or using as brad..Whatever!!
Loving the Challenge!! Love what you all are doing with the Challenge..LOVe the templates!!
For newbies: Simply Click on blue link and punch the OPEN tab and it will automatically place these in your embellishments folder in SBM!!
You all are doing so much better at designing your layouts..I just LOVE making the extras!!!

OK I THINK I finally GOT IT!!
I think what I was doing wrong 1. not resizes small enough 2. when I brought some of the embellishment in I made them into a picture so I could play around with it more. (it gives more options to change) So when i went to make it into a template all was gone because I removed the pictures! Yes I have learned a great deal from this. My only hope is the I retain it! LOL
Sue I thank you sooo very much for helping me!!! You truly are a sweetheart!
I had to redo it all again and find out what I was doing wrong and how to correct it! You gave me the right sizes but its what i did with them that made it impossible to work with!
And Julie your work is very nice you just have to make it smaller for SMB
Marion- thanks for not letting me give up on this!!! And wanting to help me with the resizing was really nice, I just might have to take you up on that someday-so hold onto that offer! LOL
Ok Here it goes!!!!

I noticed on the original layout you posted, about 1/2 of the stars were only 85kb and the other 1/2 a whopping 1.47 mb big each ! I think that is were your size problem came in.
I am not sure if you copied and pasted or how dragged them into your layout individually, but it apparently made a difference.

I need some help.......I am trying to make an embellishment from a digital photo that I took of a butterfly that I made out of coke bottle plastic.......Anyway, I don't have photoshop or paintshop pro......I am using paint.net......That may be the problem.....or it could be me and my patience..........I am trying to separate the background from the butterfly. I will post my results so far....but I am definitely not happy with it....
If anyone has any advice on how I can do this job without going crazy, I would appreciate it....Or just tell me that this is simple in Photoshop and I may have to purchase a new program......

I was getting so frustrated with trying to resize. I went out of town for a few days & with my mind rested, I came back I figured it out.. Yeah:)
My Brown background is the brown print with a filter added. I used the torn scrap twice & made one orange. I changed color & effects of the Butterflies.
I left the PICS off the template so you can see what is behind if you want to use it since I covered with Pictures . I took the striped paper & added 2 different filters & this is what I got.

My first uploaded template!! I agree that this January challenge was a dilly. The colors were very difficult to blend. I was really impressed with the designs that I have seen so far. Here's so fun I'm having with learning the Paint Shop Pro Program. Made 2 plaids to complement male and female. Then I made matching brads for all our papers!!
Newbies: Please click the blue links and choose OPEN. THese will load up in you embellishments folder in you SBM program. From there you can distribute and copy to various folders you desire. You do not need to keep these in the booster packs they come in. d27 is used with each item I create so you can identify and use freely with no restrictions except that you DON'T claim as your own and Don't restrict the use of these. THANKS!!

I got some great tips from Marion and Crops that placing your embellishments folders, etc. on you desktop and opening there is easier to manage than using your heart button..and WOW is it!! You have to use drop and drag..HOLD until SBM opens and then DROP on the page that I have downsized to the taskbar. As for ORGANIZING all the wonderful goodies...I have found that MOST folks don't identify each item with their name, etc..some way to recognize who it came from. Most ask that you not share with others on sites like ours. So I have lots of separate folders with each kit now to avoid copyright infringing. Which discourages me from even bothering to get the freebies. So I'm making my own, rather than getting the goods now. It has to be SUPER nice for me to download the freebies. I have created folders for BRADS and EYELETS, CLIPS, BUTTONS, PAPERS I make and PAPERS of others, etc. Then I open a folder and move all the items to that folder as I break the pieces down. Much easier for me to do. THen I can look for a particular item. Be careful when you delete some items. THey will copy and leave copy behind the place you moved it from or deleted from. You can delete these items but you have to do it through WINDOWS and not through SBM.
Others have far better advice than I ..so stay tuned!!

I am glad that I bought the external hard drive. I backed up everything to it last weekend and plan to back up every couple of weeks or sooner, if I download a lot of stuff. I do work off my desktop with 4 folders (embies, background, scrapes, and shapes. It's pretty easy to drag and drop into those folders. Right now I'm looking for a way to organize and search for my embies, papers, shapes etc, :)nie

I broke mine down into catagories. Like Bows, Ribbons, Lace, Stitches, hearts etc.... It was time consuming to set up, but now I can go to the folder I want.

I have many catagories. Alphas, overlays, embies, buttons and ribbons, kits, backgrounds, ploppers, frames. I also try and keep Christmas, Halloween and some other catagories separate. So far it seems to be working.

RE: So In Love template
I checked my template and the LOVE script was done in Edwardian Script. The journal was written in Bix Antique Script. I did a search of the Internet since I wasn't sure if I downloaded these fonts or if they came with a program. The Edwardian Script is available at several sites for a price. I couldn't find the Bix Antique Script. Hope that helps you.

I did the same Marion. I figured it was easier to keep things like Christmas all together, instead of searching through everything. I did break it down within the Christmas folder.

These are SHAPES to help OUTLINE a template for placing knick knacks, journaling, pictures etc. much like a SHADOW BOX. I had't found any on site so I made a bunch up..1 square yields 4 different potential layouts..TUrn them. Skew them with your PAPER SCRAPES to any album page size. Unlimited possibilities. I didn't give much thought as to rectangle and square placement..ALL RANDOM. Just something for you to try. This link will take you to more outlines.

For NEWBIES: Just click the blue link then OPEN..it will automatically send to templates in SBM. For thumbnails, simply right click..SAVE TARGET AS..then save to SHAPES folder in SBM..I make a FRAMES folder to put mine in.
Special Note: On what was mentioned earlier with hard drives etc. THe PRIVATE ALBUM feature in GALLERY makes a great place for me to store precious photo pages I create. SO if the house burns down... ALL is NOT lost. Something to remember..unlimited!!! Love this place!!

Yeah!! Now have you posted your Challenge here in Jan Challenge Discussions section?? If you are wondering how to UPLOAD..post a reply, go to bottom section and click manage attachments. Then Browse to find item to upload. You should have it converted to .smt template by doing Export to Template already. If it is less than 5MB than it will upload nicely..Not timely, be patient. Go back and get the SCREENSHOT that accompanies it so we can see your clever challenge and write a little note in the reply box, hit submit.
To post in the GALLERY, you need to go back to your TEMPLATE and say PUBLISH to..IMAGES..Click the SIZE box to MEDIUM and then click OK..Look up tutorials for posting to the Gallery for further coaching and you can print those instructions out!! Then you just WAIT till next month or continue with the CHallenge of creating matching papers, embellishments, etc. if you wish.
Hope that answers your question. Two Challenges going on...one for Pets and one for Julies kit. So go try PETS if you haven't done that one!!
Now..here's another effort at the LEARNING process. I created papers within the Scrapbook Max program for this one. I overlapped the edges of the paper and turned papers to do make a diagonal page then PUBLISHED to IMAGES at FULL size..creates JPEG (process cuts off edges of the paper)then moved the new Paper to my Paper SCRAPS. Then I opened a new page and used the new papers to custom shape to one of Angelwithin's handy dandy rounded square frames..Used the shape and downsized and lapped then together. BUT, when you pull the paper in to CUSTOM shape you see just the background not the whole design..DOn't let that THROW you off. It still cut and when shown on scrapbook page the whole image was there. And it went through the whole template process without difficulty. New discoveries everyday!! Several of you know this..I'm slow to catch on!!
Oh..Found out that the FULL sized image is 1600x1600 (over the upload limit of 1280) So I converted to PNG in PSP program to the 1280 size.
