Got a few tech questions to ask. It will be good to hear your thoughts on the subject.
1. Where do you store your fonts?
My extra fonts are stored on my external drive.
2. Where do I get a free font viewer?
In the past I had a program that made the font active just for that session, but now it is missing from my computer and I don't remember the name.
3. What fonts are actually needed in MS 2007 and Windows XP?
I want to remove the unused fonts from the main storage under Windows. What ones should I keep? Anyone know a link to get that info?

here's a past link of recommended fonts to KEEP or store for scrapbooking use..some of these links may be obsolete now but you at least can search the names..
As for storing them ..external drive is good!!
As for FONT viewer/Picker..I have come across one that is really helpful and LOVE it..

I store mine in their own folder on my external (which i cant get to at the moment )
i also use the little free utilty The Font Thing http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html it's an excellent little program, you can pick and choose which fonts you want loaded and take out the ones you dont want :D

I store mine on my external too. Also have the free AMP Font Viewer. Love how you can look at them on any drive, install them temporarily and also look at them in groups.

I have the AMP Font Viewer also and love it. I think it was recommended by someone here a while ago. I too love the feature of being able to see the font before you load it. Makeysup you will have to explain the groups part - I have tried to figure it out but have been unable.

I use Font Viewer. It's great.
About removing your fonts from the Windows Folder. DO NOT ATTEMPT IT!!! Unless you know what fonts are really safe, do not mess with that folder. Every time you install a program, fonts required by the program are installed to the Windows Font folder. If you start removing fonts, even if you think you don't use them, you will mess up your puter big time. Trust me, been there, done that!!!!!
With Font Viewer, you can install fonts temporarily, then they are removed when you turn the computer off.
Hope this helps.

Win, the basic rule with fonts is NEVER load them into your Windows Fonts directory. Once they are there they are there for good because you can cause no end of problems if you delete fonts from that directory and then find out that you have deleted something you should not have.
Also by downloading and loading fonts into your Windows fonts directory, you drastically slow down the performance of your PC as every time you open a programme you end up using up necessary memory doing something silly like loading 600 fonts.
I set up a Fonts directory on my EHD that I use for storing my downloaded fonts - This is split into two sub directories, one for handwriting fonts and one for graphical fonts.
I have two different Font viewers - one is called Nexus font (free) which is compatible with both XP and Vista as I have both platforms and Sue Fisher's "The font thing" which was built for Win95, but works perfectly even in XP - I haven't tried this one in Vista yet, but I will do because The Font Thing is by far my favourite for ease of use.
Both of these font viewers allow you to view the font in it's entirety, so that you can tell from a glance whether it has things like copyright or trademark symbols. They also allow you to temporarily load a font into memory and remove it when you have finished so that you don't overload your system.

Thanks for all your ideas so far. I am experimenting with all the suggested programs to see how they each run.
Hey Vanessa... so good to see you around again...
