View Full Version : Bushfires in Victoria Aust
02-08-2009, 06:05 PM
The bushfires in Victoria have destroyed historic towns in our country areas, and we have had over 100 people dead and over 750 homes lost. They say this was even worse than the Ash Wednesday Fires, the temp was 46 and a horrible wind with it, and the sad part is that they think it was an arsonist.
Luckily my brother and his family are safe and were given the all clear yesterday, and other friends were evacuated but returned to find they still had their home, but other family friends were not so lucky as they lost home, business and unfortunately lost their father.
May God Help Them All

OH MY!!!!!!!!!!! Aggie, we've been hearing about the fires too! That is so terrible. I know how devestating that can be! About 5 years ago, I was in San Bernardino, CA when we were evacuated from the fires. Those fires surrounded my home and it was so so scarey. I think that is why the storm last summer was so hard on me too, because I had to live through another disaster.
You and your family are in my prayers!

Thanks everyone - much appreciated. It sort puts things in perspective when these kind of thinks happen and you thank God just how lucky we are - there are always people worse off around you and our problems are only minor compared to them.

Aggie this is soooo terrible. I have been seeing it on the news and it's just so devastating. How fire can come so fast that people can't even get to safety. And to hear that someone may have started them or at least some of them is horrible. I am glad that you and your family are safe, and so sorry for the families that have lost loved ones over something so devastating.

Aggie, so sorry to hear this. Ladybug called me yesterday to see if I had heard from Moonbeam. She lives in Adelaide. Haven't heard from her. I hope she is ok.
Please, take care and keep us posted!

I had a pm from Moonbeam yesterday. She didn't mention the fires, but she must be ok since she pm'd me.
My heart is breaking for all who have been touched by the Victorian Bushfires,I am stunned & cannot believe that a huge percentage of fires that have killed so many were purposely lit, I am horrified to know that people could do that to others. I hope justice is swift in catching anyone that had a hand in these crimes.
Australia has pulled together once again to help those in need & we appreciate all the well wishes from our dear friends here.

The fire was started by a 15 year old. they have said he is being charged.
the one fire was that close to the house we could see the flames, the sky turned from red to black. we had the car all packed ready to go if needed. most of the street dident stay. only a handful of us did. the wind changed and took the fire away from the town. then we herd thunder and got a small rain shower. we then got covered in black ash. its a day i hope not to relive.

horrific events.. an event that was so abnormal.. even the fire chief said it wasnt normal fire behaviour.. we have had our share of bush fires in Australia but not this high death toll! a combination of the severe drought - the extreme heat (mid forties) or 117 farenheit.. and shocking storm winds that fanned the fire to move with super speed... and in queensland were having floods and crocodiles in the streets due to flooding rivers.. one child was taken by a croc when he went in the water after his dog..... what an unbalanced world we have... and people say there is no global warming?? weather extremes colder and wetter in places and droughts in another place - all the signs and the increase in violent storms whipped up the weather inbalances....
a tragic world indeed! I''m worn out from shedding tears from all the suffering we are seeing.

my daughter-in-laws grandparents lost everything, they also got burnt but fortunately only minor....they were off fighting the fires as volunteers and returned to find their house and everything in it gone

It is just soo sad, we lost a extended family member in the Kinglake Fire and they lost everyting. It is just too much to comprehend and take in, I almost dont want to read the papers - as it just tears at your heart, especially todays paper with the little kids on the front page. But it is nice to know that there is a lot of help coming from all over the place, it is times like this that the world seems to unite together. :)

ill e mail you both my new number ok. thank you for your thoughts. yes the fires are still burning i hear. but thank fully not near my town. i lived though the ash wensday fires we lost 3 houses in it. but this is far worse than ash wensday was. the heat for one was bad enough. id decided to put blankets on all the windows that morning and turn all the fans on high to try and keep the house cool since i thought the weather was going to be 44. can you imangine my horror at 5pm when i opened the door to see if it cooled down any to see the sky red and the smell of smoke, and then to look out the window and see flames. i just stood still not beleaving at first what i was seeing. poor shellbie and i ran around the house like two headless chocks to strat with. not knowing what way to turn. then i just said ok we pack the car and wait to be told if we need to get out. we lost power about 7 times though the day. and then the internet went down for 7 hours. and only now are we starting to get the tv chanels showing up on the tv. which is good because one can only watch so many dvd shows of bazle brush. with the boom boom. any way ill e mail you all with my new number ok.
love shelly and shellbie
