How do I make the backgrounds transperant??

You need to convert them to 32-bit color. Usually a PNG file is best. Then use your photo editing program to make the white parts transparent. What photo editing software do you have? Maybe someone here can chime in with suggestions.

Hi Kymberleyg..... Check this post out. It tells where to get the Gimp. You will be able to make transparent backgrounds with it.
