The Groove

Welcome to The Groove's Monthly Freebie Challenge!

Hello from The Groove, Scrapbook MAX!'s *free* monthly newsletter. (http://www.scrapbookmax.com/thegroove/)

Each month, a featured designer will offer a great freebie mini-kit and issue a challenge based on that kit.

All you need to do is download the freebie, create a layout that steps up to the challenge, upload it to your gallery, and post a link to your layout in a reply to this thread!

There's MORE! Everyone gets the freebie, and a lucky, random participant will also receive an official Scrapbook MAX! mousepad. WOO-HOO!

Details about this month's freebie and challenge are below!

The “Freebie” Part!

Donna Thomas has generously supplied a freebie shapes mini-kit to all our Groove readers.

Here's how Donna describes her kit:

This kit is introducing blended photo add ons concept. I have two related items in the store: Photo Word Tags and Trendy Expressions Templates (pictured below). The Trendy Expressions Templates use the Word Tags for backgrounds and coordinate well with any mixing and matching of the pages. These shapes will help you add more to your photos using family member word tags with the blending base.

The “Challenge” Part!

Donna has issued this challenge based on her freebie mini-kit:

Simple challenge: Use the shapes in this mini-kit to plop on your photos or papers and display them in the challenge thread!

Super Challenge: Use these shapes to plop on your photos or backgrounds and display them here! Use whatever shapes you have collected to decorate and coordinate your blended words. Use the base with the words as shown in picture of the freebie kit (look for the screenshot under the heading "The Monthly Freebie Challenge!" in the July 2008 Issue of The Groove (http://www.scrapbookmax.com/newsletter/)!)

A lucky random challenge participants will get an official Scrapbook MAX!mousepad.

So get the freebies, accept the challenge, and get in on the fun (and the possibility of a free mousepad!)

And of course, be sure to check out the July 2008 issue of The Groove! You'll find more freebies, inspiration, and even an awesome discount on featured kits in the Scrapbook MAX! Booster Pack Store!

Happy Scrapping!

Your Groove Editors,
Karin and Marnie

Hey, I'm not making it too hard but gives you all lots to play with and show off new ways of using this technique..

Not a lot of folks have caught on to it YET..but I think blended edges with the photo idea is so cool looking!!

So go for it!! Impress us!! I can do these in Photoshop but came up with this version for us to try in SBM!!

SPECIAL TIP: To get the white shadow look behind your wording...

1) Copy and Paste your word (which should be lying over the base piece)...don't more your word...
2) Now..with the new pasted word still selected..go to CHANGE PICTURE and change with paper scrap of white..
3) Hit OK
4) Go to layers at top of bar, send to back and bring it up behind the top word layer..nudge it out just a bit by pulling on
corners until you get it the way you like it!!

No need for SHADOW unless you like that look better.

Now, it's PLAY time!! Get going!! LOL

You all are always BLOWING me AWAY with your creative scrappin POWERS within!!

See details in these pictures!!

Thanks for the great design tips, Donna, and the fab freebie kit!

For those of you who may be more used to the User's Guide's terminology, the layering tools Donna mentioned are the Send to Back, Send Back, Send to Front, Send Forward buttons in the toolbar. See attached image of the four layering icons (the buttons with "arrows").

Have fun, and happy scrapping!

Think I'll wait to see what others do, a little confused on this one.

Uhmmm........... I downloaded the mini kit and I don't see anything in here that is like the Maximizer's Torn Photo Shapes. Is there supposed to be? I only see photo tag pieces.

I think I'm confused, too, about the challenge. :o Will have to reread it!

autisticwonder
07-01-2008, 07:35 PM
This has nothing to do with my Maximizers Torn Papers..Not sure why the confusion on it.. but this is just a Maxie Kit..which is simply a mini shapes kit for making specific kinds of projects like the bigger Maximizers do..So that is where the confusion is..

My shapes have been lone rangers in the past..So I'm giving them a classy name!! LOL.. or trying to!!

Great visuals are the Photo Word Tags and the Trendy Expressions templates.

Glad Karin made it more clear for the layers term. But most of you are veterans and should have no trouble with this simple challenge.. So explain in your own terms if you think that helpful!! I like the help!! I forget what it's like in the beginning of learning Max!!

Be interested if you can make more fun than I can think up!!

Welcome to The Groove's Monthly Freebie Challenge!

The “Freebie” Part!

Donna Thomas has generously supplied a freebie shapes mini-kit to all our Groove readers based on her super-cool full kit called Maximizers Torn Photo/Paper Scraps 1 (http://www.scrapbookmax.com/digital-scrapbooking-kits/products/Maximizers-Torn-Photos-Papers-Set-1.html).

This is where my confusion comes from. The Groove mentions the torn photo shapes and links to the full kit based on the mini kit.

I just wanted to be sure it has all the pieces it is supposed to have for the challenge. Now I will start working and thinking. Thanks

Karin

Hi there!

I think what I meant (:D) in The Groove is that Donna's Maxie Kit is similar in concept to the Maximizer Kit.

You will not get all of the items from the Maximizer Kit in the freebie Maxie Mini-Kit, but you will get some great shapes to work with.

Hope that helps - sorry for the confusion!

Karin :)

That's ALL there is to it!! You got it!! It is that simple!! BLESS you!! I love it!! Here's the visual for you to show you how to do it if it will help.

When you get that part of it..Try adding a flower to your base in place of or with your name tags..

When you guys get this..Then I want you to provide something you've seen that you want me to create for you to use/do in SBM..Let's try REVERSING challenge role!! I LOVE shapes..So post a picture of something you want me to scraplift!! AFTER you master this!! LOL

Love all of these so far!

Here is mine

I used an edge shape that I made and copied it. Then swapped it with white paper and sent it behind the picture like Donna had us do with the wording.

I attached the shape I used below.

Love the other entries! So pretty!

For this one, I didn't use any of the shape words, but I used the idea. What I like best is the sky - to me it looks real, but at the top, it's actually a paper scrap that I've used with Autisticwonder's base shape, so it blends right out. And I thought the dots looked neat. Hope you agree - it was fun.

Oh..ladies!!! You have not failed to impress me immensely AGAIN!! These are all BEAUTIFUL and well done..There is no way to goof it up!! The fun with max..it allows for so much play and redesign!!

OUTSTANDING!! THANK so much!!

Trying replacing the name with flowers along the base as well or add pretty flowers to the name for even more fun!

Love the aloha idea with the shape circles..FUN!!

WOW , jawdropper with the baby and cousin!!

Yeah Susan! THANKS too for the extra shape as well..You generous soul!!

Debby...WOW!! Great efforts and fun looks!!

Karen..my CT scrapper EXTRAORDINARE!! Thanks so much for your help and demonstration in the confusion..

Special NOTE: Hope the confusion is gone now about the Maximizers versus Maxie Kit..It's a new concept. Maximizers are efforts to help you learn and use new tools to produce a desired effect IN your SBM program and for you to build on!
Maxie Kits are going to be mini versions of Maximizers to introduce something new that you can build on as this base and words do..

FoLKS..found this idea in a book..not a scrapbook...but thought it would be soo cool in our scrapping..You are the FIRST digital scrapbooking site to have it..to my knowledge!!
I adapted it for SBM the easiest way I could think of!!

This was made using the kit called Bohemian Summer by Michelle Coleman. I used the shapes from this challenge to create the wording and the flower shapes and to shape a coordinating paper to use behind the wording. The lace is from SBM Grandmother's Wedding.

Thanks Donna! I had fun with this challenge. :)

Did you click SAVE? You have to find where you downloaded it TO. If you haven't downloaded anything else, go back and act like you're going to download it again but stop and look at the top to see what folder you have selected to download to. Or did you just click OPEN? Open should send it right to SBM.

You all are doing sooooo well!! WOW!! I'm knocked off my rocker kinda WOW!!

But some are gettin away from the challenge for the WORD TAG part of it..

You must use the BASE blender with your pages..
I'd like you to do as much with the BASE to your photos or PAPERS..You can use the flowers on the BASE..

Sorry if I confused you on this issue!! So easy for me to do that!! LOL..

Here's MORE family words and this time plurals included!! and an "s" to pluralize what you may have already.. I can't remember the dominant font I used and if I still have it with my computer transfer issues.. The kit was submitted a month ago..

SOOOO PRETTY these all are and your EFFORTs EXTREMELY WONDERFUL!!

Wow, everyone's layouts are so neat! This is a fun one, for certain.

Mine is a picture of my mother-in-law with all of her children at my grand daughter's birthday party a couple of days ago. Getting all of them together, sitting still, and smiling at the same time is just about impossible, so we took this chance and ran with it.

I used the shapes provided in the Groove's challenge freebie pack to make the flowers in the background. I made my own "We Are Family" word shapes to use with papers found on secondhandangel.wordpress.com in her Gianna kit. The frame came from there, too.

TNLori...love the soft white shading behind the words..but you are leaving out the blend base which is what would be most interesting to see what you do with a photo blender.. or paper blender.. Give the blender a try..See what you can do with it..GOOD EFFORT GIRL!!

Mary..I'm wowwed by your FLOWER POWER!! Now see what you can do with the blender piece!! LOL..

MommaBird..you are SOOO RIGHT on with your TEMplate!! It's GORGEOUS!! LOVE the colors!!

And now for my second layout, done almost completely with paper scraps that came with SBM and shapes. The only shape that didn't come with the challenge kit is the "GrandDaughter" word shape. The two elements used ("2nd" & "Birthday") came from SBMs Baby Edition, Baby Dates.

Jenna turned 2 recently. One of her favorite gifts at the party was a stroller that was just her size that her Granny got for her. Once she opened that, nothing else mattered. All she wanted to do was push the stroller around the pavilion, and that is exactly what she did. She's such an industrious little creature. I wish I had half her energy!

Ha! I thought I already posted this.. I must've forgot to push submit.. oops :) anyhoo, here is my second entry :)

I found the quote on Elegant Word Art and then used Donna's technique for making word art into shapes in SBM... I made the base with my photo of the sunset by placing a textured paper behind it and lowering the opacity of the photo and slighty changing the contrast of the photo and then used Donna's base shape to punch it and place it behind the word art... :) It maybe hard to tell that I used the base because the background is so dark... but I did use it :)

Question Donna: How come MY words don't seem to blend into the background? When I created mine, is there another step I should have used or is it just the font I chose? I used the kids font as I wanted it to look like a child was saying it. I made the words white on black background then just published to image and went back to the jpeg to use as shape. But they don't seem to "bleed" out into the base. Could I have done something else to it?

The original word art shape was shadowed and then inverted for that soft bleed effect. It went from solid white to kind of foggy, then to black. The foggy part applies a transparency.

Question Donna: How come MY words don't seem to blend into the background? When I created mine, is there another step I should have used or is it just the font I chose? I used the kids font as I wanted it to look like a child was saying it. I made the words white on black background then just published to image and went back to the jpeg to use as shape. Sorry for not being here last 4 days!! THANKs Mommabird..looks like you covered O2B question!!
Susie girl asked me to add some more words and I've had computer time woes..We installed DishNetwork to replace cable..rewired many parts of the house to do it..Poor technician!! LOL.. I got my socks sorted and laundry done waiting!! LOL..

Wanted to add a little more to your question O2B... To get more of a blended look with your word and base together..bring the word up to the half way mark with the blend..so the word sticks up a little from the fading part of the base.. Folks..Don't use shadowing for your words or blended base..

You also need to stretch the word when possible to cover the length of the base..Wonders of using shapes!! Very stretchable..but some words are too short to really do this well..

Play time is always required..

LOVE just letting you all play and experiment as much as you can!!

I'm hoping to get those words done for soon Susie!!..to end the challenge with extras!!

HUGS ladies..
