Welcome to The Groove's Monthly Freebie Challenge!

Hello from The Groove, Scrapbook MAX!'s *free* monthly newsletter. (http://www.scrapbookmax.com/thegroove/)

Each month, a featured designer will offer a great freebie mini-kit and issue a challenge based on that kit.

All you need to do is download the freebie, create a layout that steps up to the challenge, upload it to your gallery, and post a link to your layout in a reply to this thread!

There's MORE! Everyone gets the freebie, and at the end of the month, three lucky, random participants will also receive an official Scrapbook MAX! mousepad. WOO-HOO!

Details about this month's freebie and challenge are below!

The "Freebie" Part

Carena Scott has generously supplied a freebie mini-kit to all our Groove readers based on her full kit called “Alex” - “[A]versatile kit for both men and women. Scrap your family photos and outdoor photos. Warm neutral earthy colours to blend with any colour range with a little floral for the ladies and star bursts for the gents.”

The “Challenge” Part!

Carena has issued this challenge based on her freebie mini-kit:

“Use the freebie kit and complete a layout using all items. Multi use of the same item is allowed and recommended. Remember your elements don’t have to be completely within the page, they can hang out over the edge. Use as many photographs as you wish but they must be black and white or monotone. Make your pages as interesting as you can and most of all - have lots of fun..”

Three lucky, random challenge participants will get an official Scrapbook MAX!mousepad.

Love the mini-kit and want more? Get the full Alex Kit (http://www.scrapbookmax.com/store/product.php?productid=1928&cat=0) today!

So get the freebies, accept the challenge, and get in on the fun (and the possibility of a free mousepad!)

And of course, be sure to check out the May 2008 issue of The Groove (we're celebrating April Fool's Day in May)! You'll find more freebies, tips, and even an awesome discount on featured kits in the Scrapbook MAX! Booster Pack Store! (Plus, you can win a mousepad if you identify the three "Fake for April Fool's Day" headlines - details in The Groove!)

Happy Scrapping!

B & W or monotone, huh? I've been working on that tutorial you gave me but haven't been able to get the best results. I DID work out how to use it in PSE but the finished product is just not quite right. Guess now I'll have to step up and really get down to business so I can show it off in this challenge. :D

Here's a hint - you can make photos "black and white" in Scrapbook MAX! with a few easy clicks. Just right-click on your photo, then choose Effects. From the menu that drops down, choose "grayscale".

Hope that helps!

Well I must say - everyones pages are A W E S O M E.
I just love looking at them all. You know the best thing about being a designer is seeing layouts in the gallery using products that I've created. I can't explain what a thrill I get out of. I'm sure the other designers also feel the same way. The warm fuzzies just flow right though my body and it feels like utopia. OK OK maybe a slight exageration with the utopia thing but it does make me feel good. :)

Thank you to everyone for giving me such a wonderful feeling to go to bed on as once again midnight is approaching here fast and if I don't go to bed before midnight - I will loose that cinderalla dress and glass slippers and won't have the magical dreams of the handsome prince. LOL - who am I kidding. I'm so tied when I go to bed I don't hear a thing to my darling Caitlyn wakes me up and usually earlier than I'd like.

At any case it's goodnight from me and I will catch you all again in the morning.

Sweet Dreams
Hugs from Carena

Good morning everyone - I see you all have been busy while I have been sleeping. Yawn - Caitlyn woke me before I was ready to wake up but that's nothing new. LOL

Freebie consists of:
1 paper, floral branch, doodle swirly thing, eyelet & ribbon and 1 ribbon bow.

What you make with it is up to you - add other stuff if you like. Some have used templates (big thanks to Donna we all learnt so much from that month challenge - awesome - can't thank you enough even though we all got major headaches LOL) some have made framing etc. Very creative guys - well done.

Moonlight - love the family tree idea with that swirl thing (doodle) LOL - great idea.

KPierce - yes the variety amazes me also from just 5 items - everyone is being very creative and its great to see - also gives us all ideas on how and what to do. Awesome.

Clemeica - I've messaged - click the attached file and download. Hugs

tahine - go crazy girl - love what you did - awesome. Sometimes going crazy is the best way to explore and what you come up with looks great - I'm sure everyone will agree.

Marion - great layout as usual - excellent.

Will pop on over to the gallery now and leave lots of loving for you all - they are all awesome and blown away with so many layouts already and so soon in the month.

Oh - thanks Donna for the blinkie - love what you've done - you totally rock - Many thanks for your time I don't know how you find the time. - I've messaged you my email - we will get something completed soon so everyone who wants to can grab a blinkie. Hugs :)

Now if I've missed something out - sorry - catch you all in the gallery.

Hi everyone - I am so blown away with just how creative you are all getting with your layouts. To use just 5 items and get so many different looking pages is just so awesome.

I'm very pleased you are all enjoying the freebie so much. I can tell you that I'm over the moon with all the excellent layouts.

I am so proud of you all. Awesome, awesome - those warm tingles will last with me all day long. Thank you so much to everyone.

For those wondering about the tutorial it's on my blog here;

http://carenasextravagance.blogspot.com/2008/02/tutorial-photoshop-new-release-product.html

however it is for people with Photoshop program.
The effect must be achievable with Scrapbook Max as well to some degree - I would imagine you'd have to change your image to B&W and play around with the opacity when you bring your photo into your page. I will take a look and see what I can come up to see if I can help you out.

But for the moment - very soon I'm going to meet up with Evee from Scotland - she is staying with us tonight before she goes on to Wellington. Really looking forward to meeting a fellow scrapper and Scrapbook Max member. Just couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk shop and catch up.

So in the mean time - you will all have to wait. LOL Sorry about that.

Keep the pages coming - just love looking at them. So many beautiful pages. Awesome
Hugs from
Carena

With them in the background I can only use one background, I would like to layer the backgrounds... Can I move the papers to another folder some how? I hope I'm explaining myself well enough. I appreciate any advice:)

Mattchel, this is what I learn getting the paper ( thanks to our friends here) , you can do it in 2 ways:
1. from page, change image , the paper straight away become the background, difficult to manipulate it
2. Go to program Files where your scrapbookmax is ( could be in C or D drive, depends where you install SBM). So let say you install in C>program files>scrapbookmax>Galery>Images>Background>Alex-Add on the Groove .. here you find the paper. Just drag and drop to your page. This way you can manipulate it
Hope this is clear enough for you, have fun !!

Wish I could participate but being on a limited income, I can't afford the full kit.. Best of luck to those of you who are able to participate. So far the layouts are knockouts.. Have fun!

You don't need the full kit. Most of the pages you see were done with only the original free mini kit.

Well it took me a while, but I finally came up with something to do with Carena's beautiful kit. I have taken it all back to greyscale. Carena, I hope you don't mind, but I played a bit with your swirly, altered it slightly and turned it into a border.

Here is my layout for the May groove challenge. This gave me a chance to do a layout for two of my OLDEST friends. Don't know if they would appreciate that title (I will find out), but I have known them since 1st grade and that was a long time ago.

I thought I used all the embies, but now I see a paper scrap. Where did that come from? I didn't see it in the paper section.

Woops! I was so focused on using all the embies, I forgot the photograph had to be monotone. Here is the layout with a sepia photo.

Here is my entry. When a child of a former State FFA Officer is elected to a State Office in the FFA it's called a "Legacy". The photos show my state officer team in Wisconsin and my oldest daughter's here in South Dakota. I made the word art myself in Paint Shop Pro.

Yes - I to are loving the variety we are getting. Excellent. Sorry didn't get the chance to pop in yesterday as I've had a tummie bug that has introduced me to the toilet on a number of occasions yesterday. LOL I am however feeling much better today.

I've commented on everyones layouts in the gallery and if I've missed anyone out I apologize - not intentional. Excellent layouts from everyone. Awesome. :)

I was giving my 92 year old aunt a tour of this site today, and showed her the kit that Carena gave us to create our layouts. She was so impressed with the Interesting designs created from just a few things. Well done everyone!

Grannywin - that is so cool. 92 years you say. Wow. My mum turns 76 this year and basically won't come near the computer and if she did - probably only to put the axe through it. LOL She hates it. LOL - Just as well we don't own an axe.

Take care

I still have it and feel not that much better but better enough to finally get on here :) I love viewing everyone's work it's just breathtaking, you are all so talented and you literally blow my mind with such beauty that you all produce :) I want to compliment each and everyone of you personally but I would forget someone's name so have complimented you all as one. Sorry about that.

Gosh it is so long since I last looked at this challenge and everyone has been very busy. What fabulous layouts everyone has produced. The amount of talent and imagination out there is staggering. It always fascinates me just how other people interpret a challenge like this and the creative way in which they all use so few items. It is definitely true what they say

"Less is more".

Well it is nearly the end of the month already. This is the first time I have actually sat down and looked through this post from start to finish. I am astounded at the depth and variety of beautiful layouts that everyone has created with so few bits and pieces. This site certainly has a richness of soul and a wealth of artistic talent. Each and every one of you has produced a work of art. Well done.
